Baker Hughes and PETRONAS Forge Strategic Alliance for Energy Transition in Asia-Pacific

KUALA LUMPUR, HOUSTON, and LONDON – July 14, 2025 – Baker Hughes, a prominent energy technology company, has announced a strategic partnership with Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at addressing the energy expansion and transition demands in the Asia-Pacific region. This collaboration will focus on leveraging both companies’ technological strengths to enhance local supply chains and service capabilities for gas projects, aligning with the region's commitment to sustainable energy practices.

The MoU marks a significant step towards identifying and deploying complementary technologies from Baker Hughes' extensive portfolio. Lorenzo Simonelli, Chairman and CEO of Baker Hughes, emphasized the importance of supporting Asia-Pacific’s energy needs while promoting lower-carbon energy solutions. “It is critically important to grow alongside our customers in Asia-Pacific, including PETRONAS, as we work toward our shared goal of sustainable energy development to provide for a world that needs more reliable, secure and lower-carbon energy,” Simonelli stated.

As part of the initiative, Baker Hughes plans to expand its existing gas technology services facility in Malaysia to include a comprehensive aeroderivative gas turbine module repair services facility. This facility will encompass disassembly, assembly, grinding, and testing capabilities, aiming to enhance service turnaround times for the over 600 gas turbines installed across the region. The projected growth in energy demands, in conjunction with the expanded services, promises to deliver improved reliability and availability for customers.

PETRONAS, a key player in the global energy sector, has also expressed optimism regarding this partnership. Ir. Ts. Mohd Yusri Mohamed Yusof, Senior Vice President of Projects, Technology & Health, Safety, Security & Environment at PETRONAS, remarked, “Our extended strategic partnership with Baker Hughes is poised to drive excellence in project delivery, decarbonisation, supply chain resilience, and technology adoption.” He further highlighted the significance of establishing an enhanced aeroderivative facility as a positive move towards achieving cleaner energy objectives in the region.

This collaboration builds on a longstanding relationship between Baker Hughes and PETRONAS, which dates back to 1975, when both companies played pioneering roles in liquefied natural gas (LNG) solutions and exploration projects. Currently, Baker Hughes operates two turbomachinery services facilities in Malaysia and is assessing optimal locations for additional service footprints to bolster its support for local oilfield operations.
