Continental Tire Plant in Timisoara Achieves ISCC PLUS Certification

The Continental tire plant in Timisoara, Romania, has recently been awarded the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS, recognizing its commitment to sustainable manufacturing practices. This certification affirms Continental's adherence to stringent documentation requirements related to the utilization of renewable and recycled raw materials in tire production. With this achievement, the Timisoara facility becomes one of seven Continental plants worldwide to obtain ISCC PLUS certification, reinforcing the company's objective to incorporate over 40 percent renewable and recycled materials into its products by 2030.
Jorge Almeida, Head of Sustainability for Continental Tires, stated, "The successful ISCC PLUS certification of our tire plant in Timisoara emphasizes our commitment to the responsible use of resources and the integration of circular and bio-based materials into our manufacturing processes."
ISCC was established in 2010 as a multi-stakeholder initiative aimed at fostering a traceable and climate-friendly supply chain. The certification encompasses various sustainable materials, including agricultural biomass and recycled carbon-based products. This certification allows Continental to ensure complete traceability of the raw materials used, as compliant processes track the mass balance of materials throughout the production chain.
Șerban Nicolescu, Head of the Timisoara plant, remarked, "ISCC PLUS certification marks an important step forward for our sustainability efforts. It complements our investments in renewable energy and efficient tire production lines. Our team’s dedication to responsible manufacturing showcases our contribution to Continental’s global sustainability ambitions."
The Timisoara facility, which employs nearly 2,700 personnel, is recognized as one of the most advanced plants within Continental's global network. It has adopted modern technologies that enhance productivity while adhering to sustainable practices. With an annual production capacity of approximately 16 million tires, the plant serves major automotive manufacturers and markets worldwide.
Continental's commitment to sustainability extends beyond certification. The company has actively integrated mass balance-certified materials into its production processes, including synthetic rubbers derived from bio-based raw materials. This approach enables a gradual increase in the use of sustainable materials, ensuring that the balance of certified materials is accurately reported.
In conclusion, the ISCC PLUS certification of the Timisoara tire plant marks a significant milestone in Continental's journey toward sustainable manufacturing. As the company strives to meet its 2030 sustainability goals, this achievement can serve as a benchmark for other manufacturers aiming to enhance their environmental responsibility and transparency in supply chains.
