Ecopetrol Acquires Wind Autogeneración to Boost Renewable Energy in Colombia

Ecopetrol S.A., a leading energy company in Colombia, has successfully completed the acquisition of Wind Autogeneración S.A.S., the owner of the Windpeshi renewable energy project located in La Guajira. This acquisition, which involves 100% of Wind Autogeneración's shares from Enel S.A.S., was approved by Ecopetrol's Board of Directors in December 2024 and finalized after securing necessary regulatory and anti-trust authorizations.
The Windpeshi project, situated between the municipalities of Uribia and Maicao, is set to have an installed capacity of 205 megawatts (MW) for wind power generation. Once operational, it is projected to contribute approximately 1,006 gigawatt-hours (GWh) per year, accounting for 8-9% of the Ecopetrol Group's total energy demand. The project represents a significant step toward energy cost optimization and aligns with Ecopetrol's commitment to accelerating the energy transition in Colombia, offering a decarbonization benefit estimated at 4.8 million tons of CO2 emissions reduction.
Ecopetrol plans to invest nearly $350 million between 2025 and 2027 to develop the Windpeshi project, with construction expected to restart by the end of 2025 and operations commencing before 2028. To ensure high-quality standards, Ecopetrol will engage top-tier contractors experienced in renewable energy projects.
In addition to the project's technical aspects, Ecopetrol emphasizes the importance of intercultural dialogue with the Wayuu indigenous communities residing in the area affected by the project. Engagement with these communities will be coordinated with national, regional, and local authorities to ensure that their interests and concerns are addressed during the project's development.
The Windpeshi project marks a pivotal moment for Ecopetrol as it embarks on a new era of non-conventional renewable energy initiatives in La Guajira, a region with substantial potential for solar and wind energy development. This acquisition is significant not only for Ecopetrol but also for Colombia's broader energy landscape, as it reflects a growing commitment to sustainable energy sources.
Ecopetrol, which employs over 19,000 individuals, is the largest company in Colombia and plays a crucial role in the country’s oil production and energy supply chain. The company's strategic investments in renewable energy projects, such as Windpeshi, position it as a leader in the transition towards cleaner energy in Latin America.
As Ecopetrol integrates Wind Autogeneración into its corporate structure, the company aims to strengthen its renewable energy portfolio while contributing to Colombia's energy independence and sustainability goals. This acquisition signals a broader trend in the energy sector, where traditional oil and gas companies are increasingly investing in renewable technologies to adapt to changing market dynamics and environmental regulations.
