Indonesia's International Visitor Spending to Hit IDR 344 Trillion by 2025

Indonesia is poised to set a historic benchmark in international tourism spending, with projections indicating that the country’s international visitor expenditure will reach an unprecedented IDR 344 trillion in 2025. This figure, reported by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) in its 2025 Economic Impact Research, represents a nearly 12% increase over the previous record of IDR 307 trillion set in 2019. The report was produced in collaboration with Oxford Economics and highlights a significant rebound in global confidence and demand for Indonesia's diverse tourism offerings, which had been adversely affected during the pandemic.

In addition to international spending, domestic tourism is also expected to flourish, with expenditures anticipated to hit IDR 381.4 trillion. Collectively, these figures underscore the resilience and growth of Indonesia’s travel and tourism sector, which is projected to contribute IDR 1,269.8 trillion to the national economy, accounting for 5.5% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This marks a 21% increase compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019, as reported by WTTC President and CEO Julia Simpson.

"Indonesia’s success story is no accident. It is the result of bold leadership, targeted investments, and close collaboration between the private and public sectors," Simpson stated during the press release on June 12, 2025. The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy has laid out a comprehensive growth strategy that prioritizes sustainability, local communities, and resilience, contributing to a vibrant tourism sector that not only creates jobs but also attracts global travelers.

The WTTC's report further indicates that the sector supported approximately 14 million jobs in 2025, representing 9.3% of total national employment. This growth trajectory is expected to continue, with predictions that employment in the tourism sector will rise to nearly 17 million by 2035, creating over 3.2 million new jobs.

Looking ahead, the economic impact of tourism in Indonesia is projected to escalate significantly. By 2035, the WTTC forecasts that tourism will contribute IDR 1,897 trillion to the national economy, with international visitor spending expected to exceed IDR 590 trillion and domestic spending anticipated to reach IDR 599 trillion. This anticipated growth illustrates the strong recovery and potential of both domestic and international markets.

In conclusion, Indonesia’s travel and tourism sector is on a trajectory of robust recovery and growth, with strategic initiatives paving the way for sustainable development and job creation. As the world increasingly looks towards Indonesia as a premier travel destination, the importance of maintaining a focus on sustainability and community engagement will be paramount in ensuring long-term success within the sector. The WTTC's comprehensive report provides valuable insights into this evolving landscape, which is critical for stakeholders across the industry to consider as they plan for the future.
