Lenovo and European Institute of Oncology Collaborate on AI Supercomputer

On June 9, 2025, Lenovo announced a significant partnership with the European Institute of Oncology (IEO) and the Monzino Cardiology Center in Milan, Italy, to enhance scientific research capabilities in oncology and cardiology through the deployment of a High-Performance Computing (HPC) system. This collaboration aims to accelerate the development of predictive, prognostic, and diagnostic models using advanced machine learning algorithms, ultimately improving patient outcomes in cancer and cardiovascular diseases.
The newly installed HPC system boasts a processing power of 475 TFlops, facilitated by Lenovo ThinkSystem SR645 V3 and ThinkSystem SR685a V3 servers, equipped with the latest NVIDIA H200 GPUs, which provide an impressive 141 gigabytes of HBM3e memory and a data transfer rate of 4.8 terabytes per second. This powerful infrastructure will enable researchers to process extensive datasets from the clinical data lakes of both institutes, significantly expediting the identification of potential molecular candidates for further clinical trials.
According to Annarosa Farina, Chief Information Manager and Chief Data Officer at the IEO, the integration of Lenovo's HPC infrastructure is vital to the group's data-driven research strategy. "Our studies, from basic research to advanced clinical research, are based on big data. Lenovo's HPC accelerates and streamlines data processing, which is critical for implementing our strategy," she stated in a press release from Lenovo.
The IEO, founded in 1994, is dedicated to innovative cancer treatment and research, while the Monzino Cardiology Center, established in 1981, focuses exclusively on cardiovascular diseases. Together, these institutions embody a multidisciplinary approach to healthcare, pooling expertise from bioinformaticians, researchers, clinicians, and data scientists to derive actionable insights from complex datasets.
