New Trains Enhance Capacity of Singapore's Sengkang-Punggol LRT

On July 15, 2025, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) officially launched new trains for the Sengkang-Punggol Light Rapid Transit (SPLRT) system in Singapore, marking a significant enhancement in the region's transportation capacity. This initiative aligns with the rapid population growth in the Sengkang and Punggol areas, which has seen an increased demand for efficient public transport solutions. The project, which began with a ceremony attended by Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong, is set to deliver a total of 25 new trains by 2028, significantly bolstering the operational capacity of the Automated Guideway Transit (AGT) network.

The SPLRT network is critical for facilitating seamless transit in the northeast region of Singapore, serving a growing population that is projected to increase further in the coming years. "Our new trains not only maintain the familiar exterior design but also feature optimized onboard equipment that enhances operational efficiency and maintenance speed," stated Mr. Takashi Nishiyama, President of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Asia Pacific Pte. This project is backed by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Singapore, which awarded the contract to MHI and its regional subsidiary in 2022. The LTA has emphasized the importance of this enhancement for managing the rising number of SPLRT users, who currently benefit from the system's reliable and efficient service.

According to a report by the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Singapore, the Sengkang-Punggol area is undergoing extensive development, with over 200,000 new homes planned by 2030. As a result, the demand for public transport options such as the SPLRT is expected to rise significantly, necessitating increased capacity and improved service quality.
