Significant Hydrocarbon Reserves Discovered in Khairpur, Sindh

ISLAMABAD: The Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) announced on June 13, 2025, a major hydrocarbon discovery at the Faakir-1 well located in the Bitrisim Exploration License area in Khairpur, Sindh. This significant find is poised to impact the energy landscape in Pakistan, reflecting the country’s ongoing exploration efforts in the oil and gas sector.

According to the statement released by OGDCL, the exploratory well, which was spudded on December 31, 2024, reached a depth of 4,185 meters in the Sembar Formation. The drilling operation included two Drill Stem Tests (DSTs) targeting the Lower Goru Formation, specifically the Massive and Basal Sand intervals. The results were promising, indicating a cumulative production capacity of 6.4 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (mmscfd) along with 55 barrels of condensate daily.

This discovery is part of a broader effort by OGDCL to enhance the domestic energy supply amid increasing energy demands and fluctuating international oil prices. The company, holding a 95% working interest in the well, is optimistic about the potential of the newly discovered reserves to contribute significantly to the national grid.

Dr. Ahmad Raza Khan, an energy analyst at the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics, noted, "The discovery at Faakir-1 not only boosts OGDCL’s portfolio but also indicates the untapped potential of the region. It is imperative that the government supports exploration initiatives to ensure energy security."

The significance of this discovery extends beyond immediate economic benefits. Historical data from the Pakistan Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources indicates that previous explorations in the Sindh region yielded mixed results, underscoring the importance of continuous investment in technology and expertise.

OGDCL’s latest find comes at a time when the global energy market is experiencing volatility, with crude oil prices recently climbing by 4%. Industry experts, such as Dr. Sarah Malik, Professor of Energy Policy at the National University of Sciences and Technology, emphasize that discoveries like these can stabilize local prices and reduce dependency on imports.

This hydrocarbon discovery is likely to attract further investments in the energy sector, particularly as Pakistan aims to enhance its energy independence. According to a report by the International Energy Agency published in 2023, countries that actively explore and develop their natural resources can significantly improve their economic resilience and energy autonomy.

In conclusion, the discovery of hydrocarbon reserves at the Faakir-1 well marks a pivotal moment for Pakistan’s energy sector. With proper management and investment, these reserves could play a crucial role in meeting the country’s future energy needs. Stakeholders from various sectors are encouraged to monitor the developments closely, as this discovery may catalyze further exploration and investment in the region.
