Trafigura Partners with ZeroNorth to Enhance Maritime Sustainability

On July 9, 2025, Trafigura Group Pte Ltd., a leading player in the global commodities sector, announced a strategic alliance with ZeroNorth, a maritime technology firm known for its innovative solutions in shipping efficiency. This partnership aims to implement ZeroNorth's advanced platform across Trafigura's fleet of over 350 vessels, utilizing sophisticated voyage optimization systems, emissions analytics, and vessel reporting tools.
The collaboration will also see Trafigura taking an equity stake in ZeroNorth, thereby strengthening the ties between the two entities. ZeroNorth's technology leverages artificial intelligence and real-time data, including weather conditions, vessel specifications, and fuel availability, to enhance operational performance continuously. This initiative is projected to significantly reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions across Trafigura's chartered fleet.
Andrea Olivi, Global Head of Shipping at Trafigura, emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating, "This partnership marks an important step in Trafigura's commitment to improving efficiency and sustainability across its maritime operations. The ZeroNorth platform will help us optimize fleet performance through enhanced monitoring of fuel and emissions while improving data collection and quality. It will also strengthen our relationships with vessel owners through more effective communication and information sharing."
Søren C. Meyer, CEO of ZeroNorth, expressed pride in the partnership, noting, "We’re proud to partner with Trafigura – one of the largest players in global commodity trading and shipping. This partnership reflects a shared commitment to advancing the use of technology and high-quality data, sending a clear signal to the industry about the vital roles these play in the energy transition. Trafigura’s insight, scale, and ambition will be invaluable to our strategic direction and will help accelerate the impact of our platform across the industry."
Trafigura, founded over 30 years ago, plays a critical role in the global supply chain by connecting vital resources to power and build infrastructure. The company employs over 13,000 people and operates in more than 150 countries. Additionally, Trafigura is investing in renewable energy projects to facilitate a transition to a low-carbon economy.
ZeroNorth, established in 2020, has rapidly expanded its workforce to 600 employees across 10 global locations. The company has made significant strides in reducing emissions, optimizing 72,000 voyage legs and generating 1.5 million routes in 2024, which resulted in a reduction of CO2 emissions by over one million metric tonnes. By combining advanced technology and expertise, ZeroNorth aims to propel the maritime industry toward achieving zero emissions.
As the partnership unfolds, it is expected to enhance operational efficiency within the shipping industry while addressing pressing environmental concerns. Stakeholders in both companies anticipate that this alliance will not only set a new standard for sustainability in maritime operations but also drive further innovations in the sector, paving the way for a cleaner, more efficient future in global shipping.
