59th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival Honors Sarsgaard and Krieps

The 59th edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival commenced on July 4, 2025, in Prague, honoring acclaimed American actor Peter Sarsgaard and Luxembourg actress Vicky Krieps with the prestigious Festival President’s Award during the opening ceremony. The festival, renowned for showcasing cinematic excellence, will run until July 12, featuring a diverse array of films and honoring notable industry figures.
Peter Sarsgaard, celebrated for his compelling performances, will be recognized for his role in the film 'Shattered Glass' (2003), directed by Billy Ray, for which he earned a Golden Globe nomination. Vicky Krieps will be honored for her portrayal of the rebellious Empress Sisi in 'Corsage' (2022), which earned her the European Film Award for Best Actress. The festival will screen 'Love Me Tender' (2025) to celebrate her achievements.
Additionally, Dakota Johnson will present her latest films, 'Splitsville' and 'Materialists,' at the festival and is set to receive the Festival President’s Award on July 6. Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgård is slated to close the festival with a recognition of his enduring contributions to cinema, alongside the presentation of his new film, 'Sentimental Value,' directed by Joachim Trier, which recently won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival.
In a notable highlight, actor Michael Douglas will attend the festival to present a newly restored version of the Oscar-winning classic 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest' (1975), directed by the late Czech filmmaker Miloš Forman. Douglas, who produced the film, will discuss its impact and legacy in the context of modern cinema.
The festival’s grand jury will evaluate 12 films vying for the coveted Crystal Globe, an award that recognizes outstanding cinematic achievements. This year's lineup promises to offer a compelling mix of narratives and genres, reflecting the evolving landscape of international filmmaking.
