Annual Children's Day Returns to Jersey's Howard Davis Park

Children's Day is set to make a vibrant return to Howard Davis Park in Jersey, scheduled for Sunday, September 24, 2023, from 10:00 to 17:00 BST. This annual event, which has become a staple for local families, promises a day filled with live music, games, food, and a plethora of free attractions designed for children. Last year, the event successfully drew around 10,000 attendees, showcasing its significance in the community.
The inception of Children’s Day can be traced back to the recommendations of the Independent Jersey Care Inquiry in 2017, which emphasized the need to create supportive environments for families affected by past institutional failures. Cheyenne O’Connor, head of the non-profit organization Butterfly Effect and one of the event’s key organizers, expressed her enthusiasm, stating, "Kids absolutely love it; there's so much to do. All the entertainment is free."
The first Children’s Day was celebrated in 2020 with tree planting initiatives but faced interruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The inaugural public event was successfully held in 2022, marking a return to community celebrations. This year, families can look forward to various attractions, including carousels, bouncy castles, and gaming hubs, providing an entertaining day for children.
O’Connor highlighted the importance of the event as a means for families to come together, especially in light of the rising cost of living. "It’s really nice they can come down and not have to worry about that for a day," she noted, emphasizing the community aspect of the gathering. Food stalls will offer discounted prices, and families are encouraged to bring their own picnics to further ease costs.
The Butterfly Effect, established in 2023, provides support to survivors of sexual and institutional abuse, as well as assistance to children in care. According to O’Connor, the organization has already assisted over 900 individuals since its launch. "It just shows that it was needed," she remarked, indicating a clear demand for the services provided.
The return of Children’s Day not only highlights the commitment to community well-being but also underscores the importance of fostering an inclusive environment for families. The event stands as a testament to the resilience of Jersey's community spirit and the ongoing efforts to support those in need.
As the event approaches, anticipation builds for a day of joy and connection, reaffirming the community's dedication to creating brighter futures for its children.
