Celebrating 50 Years of Literary Friendship: The Somerset Book Club

The Lit book club, a cherished institution in North Somerset, is commemorating its 50th anniversary this year. Founded in 1975 by Elspeth Davis, the club has evolved from a gathering of seven women into a vibrant community of literary enthusiasts, now celebrating over 30 members. The club has met 500 times, read more than 350 books across various genres, and shared over 1,000 bottles of wine, fostering not only a passion for reading but also a deep camaraderie among its members.

Elspeth Davis, who initiated the book club during her time as a new mother, sought to create a space to 'exercise' her mind and connect with others. "I've really enjoyed the variety of books we've read and the friendship and the camaraderie," remarked Jill Stanley, a fellow member who joined shortly after the club's inception. Davis brought the idea of a book club from Canada, where she had previously lived, as she found a lack of local options in her hometown of Easton-in-Gordano.

The name 'Lit' stands for Literary Circle, and the club's members have embraced an eclectic mix of literature, ranging from thrillers to poetry. However, they have collectively decided against exploring the science fiction genre, showcasing the diverse preferences within the group. Mary Donaldson, who joined in 1978, expressed her appreciation for the club's selection, stating, "The variety of books is absolutely amazing, and there are lots of books that I never would have thought to pick up."

Beyond their literary discussions, the members have formed a close-knit community, bonding over shared interests such as walking and cinema. Sue Tuckwell, who joined in the mid-1980s, shared her initial apprehension regarding the club’s extensive reading list but soon realized that discussing books—regardless of personal preference—was a pathway to friendship.

As the Lit book club celebrates its 50th year, it serves as a testament to the enduring power of literature to foster connections among individuals. The members not only share a love of reading but also a commitment to nurturing friendships that have stood the test of time. The club’s legacy continues to inspire, proving that the joy of reading is amplified when shared with others.
