Celebrating 60 Years of the Blue Moon Club: A Musical Legacy

In a heartfelt tribute to a legendary venue, a new book titled "Everyone's Gone To The Moon" has been released, commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Blue Moon Club in Cheltenham, England. Opened on July 17, 1965, the club became a significant cultural hub, hosting emerging music legends such as Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie, and Elton John, who graced its stage during its brief but impactful two-year run.

The Blue Moon Club, located on High Street, became a magnet for music enthusiasts from across the United Kingdom and even the United States. Its opening night featured the Bo Street Runners, an R&B band whose drummer, Mick Fleetwood, would later achieve fame with Fleetwood Mac. Mike Williams, one of the club's former members and a contributor to the book, recalled the exhilarating atmosphere that enveloped the venue. "It was that buzz of being among people that were all likeminded that made the club so special," he stated.

The club's most notable performance occurred in February 1967 when Jimi Hendrix took the stage. "Mr. Goddard jumped the queue, which trailed back to The Promenade. I went along having heard him on the radio; he was up-and-coming," he recounted. Despite the club's capacity being around 350 to 360, over 700 fans packed the venue that night, demonstrating the immense popularity of the artist.

The book, authored by Richard Goddard, Dave Jackson, Chris Stanbury, and Mike Williams, draws on the memories of more than 500 former members, illustrating the vibrant history of the Blue Moon Club. Their efforts reflect a deep appreciation for a venue that fostered a sense of community and musical exploration. According to Mr. Goddard, "The publisher basically said 'Stop,' we were putting too much into it and he's prompted us with a few ways we could go forward, something like a second edition. A lot of people have put a lot of effort into giving us this information."

The Blue Moon Club closed its doors in May 1967, following a decision by the owners to change direction. However, its legacy endures, as former members continue to gather regularly to reminisce and celebrate the music that once filled its walls. As the 60th anniversary approaches, the impact of the Blue Moon Club is a testament to the power of music to connect people and create lasting memories, making it a significant chapter in the history of Cheltenham's cultural landscape.

In summary, the release of "Everyone's Gone To The Moon" not only honors the legendary performances that took place at the Blue Moon Club but also serves as a reminder of the vibrant music scene of the 1960s, which shaped the future of popular music. As fans reflect on their experiences, the book encapsulates the spirit of a time when music brought people together in unforgettable ways.
