Emma Watson Receives Six-Month Driving Ban Following Speeding Incident

Emma Watson, the acclaimed actress known for her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter film series, has been banned from driving for six months following a speeding incident last summer. This decision was finalized during a brief hearing at High Wycombe Magistrates' Court on July 17, 2025, where it was revealed that Watson was caught driving her blue Audi at 38 mph in a 30 mph zone in Oxford on July 31, 2024.
Prior to this incident, Watson had already accumulated nine points on her driving license, which led to an automatic disqualification upon the endorsement of three additional points due to the recent speeding violation. The court imposed a fine totaling £1,044, an amount confirmed by Watson's lawyer, Mark Haslam, who mentioned that she is currently a student and capable of paying the fine. Watson did not attend the five-minute hearing, which concluded without her presence.
Watson, aged 35, has been pursuing a master’s degree in creative writing at the University of Oxford since 2023, marking a significant shift in her career after rising to fame in 2001 with the release of 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.' She has since transitioned from acting to academia and entrepreneurship, having launched a sustainable gin brand with her brother in 2023.
In a notable coincidence, another Harry Potter actress, Zoe Wanamaker, who portrayed Madam Hooch, was also banned from driving on the same day for a similar offence. Wanamaker, 76, was caught driving at 46 mph in a 40 mph zone in Newbury, Berkshire, on August 7, 2024. Like Watson, she faced a six-month ban and was fined £1,044 after also accruing nine points on her license prior to her violation.
Both actresses' cases were presided over by District Judge Arvind Sharma, who underscored the importance of adhering to traffic laws, regardless of the individuals involved. In light of these incidents, the local community has expressed concern over speeding violations, particularly in residential areas where such behaviours can lead to increased risks for pedestrians and other drivers.
Watson’s involvement in the upcoming HBO adaptation of the Harry Potter series, where new actors have been cast, has sparked discussions among fans regarding her current role in the franchise. As the production progresses, the public interest in both Watson’s work and personal life remains high, especially following these legal challenges.
While this incident may pose temporary setbacks for both actresses, it serves as a reminder of the consequences of traffic violations and the legal responsibilities all drivers must uphold. As Watson continues her studies and entrepreneurial ventures, her recent driving ban may prompt a reevaluation of her public persona and its implications for her future career endeavors.
