LONDON — Frederick Forsyth, the esteemed British author renowned for his political thriller 'The Day of the Jackal,' has passed away at the age of 86 following a brief illness. His literary agent, Jonathan Lloyd, confirmed that Forsyth died at home early Monday morning, surrounded by family.

Forsyth was born in Kent, England, in 1938, and initially served as a pilot in the Royal Air Force. Following his military service, he transitioned to journalism, working as a foreign correspondent. His experiences in this role significantly influenced his writing, notably during the coverage of the attempted assassination of French President Charles de Gaulle in 1962, which inspired his debut novel, 'The Day of the Jackal.' Published in 1971, the book catapulted him to international fame, later adapted into a successful film in 1973 and a recent television series on Peacock.

Forsyth authored more than 25 novels throughout his career, with works such as 'The Odessa File,' 'The Dogs of War,' and 'The Fist of God' selling over 75 million copies globally. His contributions to the thriller genre were acknowledged by his publisher, Bill Scott-Kerr, who stated, "Still read by millions across the world, Freddie’s thrillers define the genre and are still the benchmark to which contemporary writers aspire."

In an interview with the BBC in 2015, Forsyth revealed his involvement with British intelligence agency MI6, claiming he had assisted them during tumultuous periods, including the Nigerian Civil War. His assertions provide a glimpse into the complex interplay between his real-life experiences and his fictional narratives.

Forsyth's legacy extends beyond his literary achievements; his storytelling shaped the expectations of the thriller genre and influenced generations of writers. His final work, 'Revenge of Odessa,' a sequel to 'The Odessa File,' is set to be published in August 2025, ensuring that his literary presence will continue even after his passing.

As the literary world mourns the loss of a master storyteller, Forsyth's contributions to literature and his ability to weave intricate tales that reflect political realities will be remembered and celebrated by readers and writers alike.
