Global Fans Fund Mural for Iconic Rock Band The Zombies in St Albans

A vibrant mural celebrating the legendary British rock band The Zombies has been unveiled in their hometown of St Albans, Hertfordshire, following a successful crowdfunding campaign led by fans worldwide. The mural, painted on the side of the Pioneer Club—a site significant to the band's history as the location of their first rehearsal in 1961—was revealed on Saturday, coinciding with the screening of their new documentary, "Hung Up On A Dream."

The project successfully raised £2,712 (approximately $3,700) within 48 hours, surpassing the initial goal of £2,000 ($2,744). Lead singer Colin Blunstone expressed his gratitude, stating that the mural "perfectly captures the spirit of the original band in the mid-1960s," emphasizing the enduring connection between The Zombies and their hometown. Keyboardist Rod Argent echoed this sentiment, noting that the entire band felt "very moved" to witness the artwork.

Steve Rossi, co-manager of The Zombies fan club, highlighted the fans' desire to honor the band, mentioning previous initiatives aimed at boosting their presence in music charts and securing a place in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Rossi remarked, "This was about the Zombies community coming together once again to honor our band."

The mural, designed by Norwich-based artist Ant Steel, is inspired by the cover art of The Zombies' debut album "Begin Here" (1965) and incorporates the psychedelic colors of their acclaimed second release, "Odessey and Oracle" (1968). Steel noted the significance of the project, stating, "I know how much it means to so many fans across the globe," and expressed pride in being chosen for such an important artwork.

The unveiling event attracted fans from various countries, including the United States and Japan, underscoring The Zombies' international legacy. Their 1968 hit, "Time of the Season," remains a defining track in rock music history, illustrating the band's lasting impact on the genre.
