In Memoriam: Ron Johanson, ACS - A Visionary Leader in Cinematography

Ron Johanson, a highly respected cinematographer and former president of the Australian Cinematographers Society (ACS), passed away on June 28, 2025, at the age of 76. Known for his significant contributions to both the ACS and the broader film community, Johanson’s legacy is marked by his dedication to the art of cinematography and the mentorship of emerging talent.
Born in Melbourne in 1949, Johanson began his career at the young age of 16 as a messenger in the film industry. His passion for cinematography quickly propelled him into the camera department, where he became a lighting cameraman within five years. Following a period of freelancing, he established himself at Martin Williams Films in Queensland, working as a director and cinematographer on various commercials and documentaries. In 1980, he founded the Roly Poly Picture Co., which became his primary platform for directing and shooting television series, documentaries, and feature films.
Among his notable works as a cinematographer were Scott Hicks’ directorial debut, *Freedom* (1982), and Joseph Van Winkle’s *The Woman Inside* (1981). Johanson joined the ACS in 1992 and dedicated himself to serving the organization in numerous leadership roles. He was president of the Queensland branch for over a decade, vice president for five years, and president of the Society for an impressive 14 years. His leadership was instrumental in establishing the Society’s first national headquarters and promoting the formation of branches across all states and territories.
Friend and colleague Ernie Clark, ACS, remarked on the ACS website that Johanson was pivotal in guiding the publication of *The Shadowcatchers*, a comprehensive history of cinematography in Australia, released in 2012. During his presidency, the ACS received the prestigious Byron Kennedy Award from the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts, a notable achievement as it marked the first time a guild had been honored in this manner.
Johanson’s influence extended beyond Australian borders, as he represented Australia in Imago, the International Federation of Cinematographers, and was elected co-president of the organization in 2021. A tribute on Imago’s website highlighted Johanson’s vast legacy, stating, "not only in the images he helped create, but in the people he inspired, the institutions he built, and the spirit of generosity and camaraderie he embodied."
In recognition of his contributions, Johanson was inducted into the ACS Hall of Fame in 2005 and received lifetime membership in 2007. His accolades in the advertising sector included two Cannes Lions, three Mobius Awards, four New York Festivals International Advertising Awards, and two ACS Gold Tripods.
Johanson’s passing is a significant loss to the cinematography community, which will remember him not only for his artistic prowess but also for his unwavering commitment to nurturing the next generation of filmmakers. His legacy continues to inspire countless professionals within the industry, ensuring that his impact will be felt for years to come.
