Insights from Greg Holt: Shaping the Future of Themed Attractions

In a recent feature, Pico Play, a global leader in developing themed attractions, shared insights from Greg Holt, the company’s Creative Design Director. Holt, who has been instrumental in the company’s creative vision since its inception in 2016, has over two decades of experience in the design and development of attractions worldwide. His expertise is evident in projects ranging from large-scale water parks across Southeast Asia to thrilling attractions in Australia, underscoring his significant impact on the industry.
Pico Play, headquartered on the Gold Coast of Australia, operates design studios in various regions, including Malaysia and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). The company is currently expanding its footprint with plans for a fourth design studio in the Middle East, responding to the growing demand for its creative services in that region.
Holt emphasizes the importance of teamwork in achieving design excellence. “I’m very fortunate to lead creative individuals at the top of their games. They put themselves on the line and bare their creative souls every day, and that commands both respect and understanding for their work,” Holt stated during the interview. The collaborative effort among design teams across continents allows Pico Play to implement culturally sensitive design principles, which Holt considers crucial for success in diverse markets.
The KSA studio is currently engaged in master planning and concept design for an ambitious water park and theme park project in the United Arab Emirates. This project is part of a larger mixed-use development that will also feature a zoo, hotel, and retail space. Holt noted, “We stand by what we design, and we know that it’s essential to marry big ideas with practicality if a project is to succeed.”
In Cambodia, Holt and his team are injecting excitement into a hotel and casino development, designing a themed water park and dry park that embodies both creativity and practicality. Pico Play’s approach to delivering exceptional design aligns with clients’ budgets and business plans, setting the company apart in the competitive landscape of themed attractions.
Holt’s passion for art began at a young age, winning his first art competition at just nine years old. He pursued his interest in commercial art, graduating with distinction from the Auckland Institute of Technology’s Bachelor of Graphic Design program. Recently, after a 15-year hiatus from personal painting, Holt returned to his artistic roots and sold his first painting to a collector, showcasing the enduring nature of his creativity.
As the themed attractions industry evolves, Holt’s leadership at Pico Play continues to shape the future of entertainment design. The company’s commitment to producing memorable experiences through innovative design practices positions it well for continued success in a competitive global market. With an eye on future projects and a focus on cultural sensitivity, Pico Play is poised to leave a lasting impact on the world of themed attractions.
