Lionsgate's Michael Jackson Biopic Set for April 2026 Release

Lionsgate's highly anticipated biopic, titled "Michael," which chronicles the life of the iconic pop star Michael Jackson, is now scheduled for release on April 24, 2026. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the film will prominently feature Jaafar Jackson, the nephew of the late artist, in the titular role. This date marks a significant shift from its previously planned release dates, which included an initial target of April 2025 and a subsequent postponement to October 2025.

The decision to release the film in spring 2026 comes after several delays, with the latest adjustments reportedly being in response to challenges faced during the production process. According to Lionsgate, the film will undergo an additional 22 days of photography in June 2026 to ensure a polished final product. This additional shooting is indicative of the studio's commitment to maintaining the film's quality amid rising public interest. Adam Fogelson, Lionsgate's film chair, emphasized the strong global enthusiasm for the project, stating, "Ever since we debuted some early Michael footage at CinemaCon last year, it’s been crystal clear how much global interest and enthusiasm there is."

The biopic is expected to cover key moments in Jackson's life, although it will notably conclude with his departure from The Jacksons following the release of his first solo album, "Off the Wall," in 1979. The film's narrative has been adjusted from its original scope due to concerns regarding sensitive content. Reports indicate that the film's third act faced retooling after it was revealed that it included dramatizations of an individual who had previously accused Jackson of child sexual abuse. This individual had a legal settlement with Jackson's estate, preventing any dramatization of their accusations.

The cast of the film also includes notable actors such as Colman Domingo portraying Joe Jackson, Nia Long as Katherine Jackson, and a supporting ensemble that features Miles Teller, Laura Harrier, Kat Graham, Larenz Tate, and Derek Luke. The screenplay was penned by John Logan, and the film is produced by Graham King, John Branca, and John McClain.

In light of Jackson's profound impact on the music industry, especially with his record-breaking album "Thriller," the biopic aims to celebrate his legacy while navigating the complexities of his life and career. Jackson, who passed away in June 2009 at the age of 50, remains a polarizing figure in popular culture, and the film is expected to spark discussions surrounding his life and the controversies that surrounded him.

As the film approaches its release date, Lionsgate plans to unveil more details about the production, including insights from the cast and crew, as well as promotional materials that could heighten anticipation. A second film focusing on the later stages of Jackson's career is reportedly in development, suggesting that the filmmakers are keen to explore the full scope of his contributions to music and culture.
