Mark Hamill Discusses His Role in Stephen King's 'The Life of Chuck'

In an exclusive interview, Mark Hamill, renowned for his role as Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars franchise, discussed his latest project, 'The Life of Chuck,' an adaptation of Stephen King's 2020 novella of the same name. Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival on June 10, 2025, the film has garnered significant attention, taking home the People's Choice Award and receiving critical acclaim for its emotional depth and unique narrative structure.
Hamill portrays Albie Krantz, the wise grandfather of Charles 'Chuck' Krantz, whose life story is told in reverse through the performances of four actors: Cody Flanagan, Benjamin Pajak, Jacob Tremblay, and Tom Hiddleston, who plays Chuck as an adult. Unlike King's typical horror themes, this film presents a poignant exploration of life's moments, infused with elements of the supernatural.
'It's tears of joy because it reaffirms your belief in mankind,' Hamill explained during the interview. He emphasized that the film diverges from King's usual horror narratives, representing an innovative departure for the celebrated author. 'It's certainly nothing like Stephen King has ever written before,' he stated, noting that the film maintains some of King's signature trademarks while delivering a story that is more uplifting and optimistic.
The film's positive reception highlights its emotional resonance, with Hamill urging audiences to experience the film firsthand. 'It's so positive. It's so optimistic about life,' he remarked. 'It teaches you there are moments that, in life, you think are trivial that collectively become very important.'
In addition to 'The Life of Chuck,' Hamill is set to appear in another King adaptation, 'The Long Walk,' which delves into darker themes. This film, directed by Francis Lawrence, follows a dystopian narrative where young men are forced to participate in a deadly competition. Hamill's role as a military major marks a stark contrast to his character in 'The Life of Chuck,' showcasing his versatility as an actor.
Reflecting on his collaboration with King and director Mike Flanagan, Hamill expressed his appreciation for their creative partnership. 'I owe the world to Mike Flanagan,' he said, highlighting Flanagan's ability to challenge him as an actor. Hamill's enthusiasm for his current projects indicates a promising trajectory in his career, as he continues to explore diverse roles that resonate with audiences.
As the film releases to theaters, Hamill remains focused on its impact, emphasizing the message of inherent goodness in humanity amidst a landscape of division and uncertainty. 'It's exactly the right movie at exactly the right time,' he concluded, underscoring the film's relevance in today's society.
