Nicole Car Reflects on Love Found Behind the Opera Curtains

In a heartfelt narrative, Australian soprano Nicole Car recounts the transformative moment of realizing her love for her co-star Étienne during their 2015 performance of Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin" at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Car, who was cast on short notice for the role of Tatiana, describes her initial impressions of Étienne as both amusing and endearing, particularly noting his unabashed confidence following his own performance in Verdi's "Don Carlos".
"I sang like a god," he declared, marking a stark contrast to her more understated Australian sensibilities. Despite her initial skepticism, Car found herself drawn to his charm and energy, especially during their long conversations exploring the city on a rare day off. Their connection deepened as they navigated rehearsals together, and the palpable chemistry between them mirrored the intensity of their onstage roles.
As the curtains fell on their first performance together, Car felt a surge of emotion, recognizing that her feelings for Étienne extended beyond mere stage chemistry. "It was obvious to me that this went well beyond onstage chemistry or a summer crush. I knew then something serious was happening. I had fallen in love," she recalled.
Following their initial run, the couple faced separation as Étienne took a contract at Glyndebourne while Car returned to Australia. Their relationship endured through long phone calls and surprise visits, showcasing a commitment that transcended geographical barriers. "He defied his director and ignored countless phone calls demanding he return to set while he picked me up from the airport," Car reminisced, highlighting Étienne's prioritization of their relationship over professional commitments.
The couple eventually settled in Paris, where they are raising their son and continuing their artistic pursuits. Car's upcoming performance as Rusalka in Opera Australia’s production of Dvořák’s "Rusalka" is set to take place at the Sydney Opera House from July 19 to August 11, 2025. Reflecting on their journey, Car notes, "It’s the laughs we share that keep our hearts singing," emphasizing the importance of humor and connection in their relationship.
This narrative not only captures the essence of love blossoming in the world of opera but also serves as a reminder of the profound connections that can arise in creative spaces. As Car prepares to step into a new role, she carries with her not only the memories of their shared experiences but also the enduring support of her partner, making this chapter in her career even more significant.
