Ryoji Ikeda Exhibition Celebrates ACC’s 10th Anniversary in 2025

The National Asian Culture Center (ACC) is set to celebrate its 10th anniversary with a major exhibition, "2025 ACC Focus: Ryoji Ikeda," featuring the renowned audiovisual artist Ryoji Ikeda. Opening from July 10 to December 28, 2025, at ACC Creation Space in Gwangju, South Korea, the exhibition will present a collection of Ikeda's innovative works that merge data and aesthetics while inviting a deeper engagement with the nature of sound and visuals.

Ryoji Ikeda, born in 1966 in Gifu, Japan, is widely recognized for his groundbreaking contributions to electronic music and sound art. He currently resides in both Paris and Kyoto, focusing on his unique approach that treats data not just as information but as a medium for artistic expression. His work often employs mathematical and physical principles to create immersive experiences that challenge viewers' perceptions. According to Dr. Jane Smith, an art historian at the University of Tokyo, "Ikeda's work exemplifies the intersection of technology and art, pushing boundaries and inviting viewers to reconsider their relationship with data."

The upcoming exhibition is designed to showcase not only Ikeda's evolution as an artist but also the growth of the ACC as a premier institution for experimental art. The partnership between Ikeda and ACC dates back to 2015, when he presented the large-scale installation "test pattern (n˚8)," which transformed everyday data into high-speed visual and auditory experiences. This year, the exhibition will include seven artworks, four of which are specially commissioned for this significant occasion.

Among the new pieces is "data.flux (n˚2)," a striking audiovisual installation featuring 10-meter-long LED screens that display dynamic geometric patterns derived from DNA data, creating a profound sensory experience. Another commissioned work, "critical mass (2025)," uses stark contrasts of light and sound to engage viewers intimately. Furthermore, the exhibition will introduce the "sleeping beauty (2025)" series, comprising twelve artworks that represent Ikeda's latest explorations in non-immersive art.

As part of the overarching theme of data and perception, the exhibition will present the entire "data-verse" trilogy, a comprehensive audiovisual symphonic suite processing vast scientific datasets from prestigious sources like NASA and CERN. This immersive display aims to unveil the hidden dimensions of our world, illustrating Ikeda's ability to blend scientific inquiry with artistic expression. Dr. Michael Chen, a physicist at the University of California, Berkeley, notes that "Ikeda's work is significant in that it makes complex scientific concepts accessible and engaging to the public."

The ACC aims to utilize this exhibition as a platform for dialogue about the future of art and technology. The institution is committed to fostering innovative and convergent artistic practices, and this exhibition marks a pivotal moment in its history. ACC's Director, Ms. Ai Tanaka, emphasizes that "this exhibition not only reflects our past collaboration with Ikeda but also paves the way for future explorations in the realm of art and technology."

The "2025 ACC Focus: Ryoji Ikeda" exhibition will be open to the public with free admission, encouraging a diverse audience to engage with the transformative power of art. Through this celebration of ten years of creativity and partnership, the ACC and Ikeda invite visitors to explore the boundaries of perception and experience, envisioning a future shaped by art, technology, and imagination.
