Twelve-Year-Old DJ Fionn Set to Shine at Stendhal Festival 2024

In a remarkable showcase of youthful talent, twelve-year-old DJ Fionn O'Kane is preparing to perform at the Stendhal Festival, one of Northern Ireland's most prominent independent music and arts festivals. Scheduled to take place from July 4 to July 6, 2024, at Ballymully Cottage Farm in Roe Valley, the festival will feature an impressive lineup that includes notable acts such as The Lightning Seeds, Brit Award-winning singer-songwriter Kate Nash, and DJ Mark McCabe, a significant influence on the young artist.
Fionn's journey into the world of DJing began at the tender age of two, inspired by his father's passion for music and DJing. The young artist's talent has already attracted attention in his hometown of Limavady, where he has performed at local events, including a memorable gig at Termoncanice Primary School during a Christmas assembly, which he describes as one of his first official performances.
"My dad has always done a bit of DJing, so I grew up with it, and I used to watch YouTube videos of DJs when I was younger," Fionn explained in an interview with BBC News NI. "I like all sorts of music, but mostly I enjoy house and techno, which is the genre I play."
Fionn's upcoming performance at the Stendhal Festival marks a significant milestone in his budding career. Anticipating the event, he remarked, "I have most of the set finished already; I am just tweaking the last few things for it," expressing both excitement and nervousness about performing in front of a larger audience than he has encountered before.
The Stendhal Festival, now in its fifteenth year, is celebrated for its diverse programming, including music, comedy, dance, and workshops, ensuring a family-friendly atmosphere. The festival's name derives from the Stendhal syndrome, a condition associated with overwhelming emotional responses to beauty. With an expected audience of music enthusiasts of all ages, this year's festival promises to be a vibrant celebration of arts and culture.
Fionn's participation in the festival came about after he spotted an advertisement on social media. In a moment of determination, he submitted his application, keeping it a secret from his parents, Andy and Kerry O'Kane, until after it was sent. "I applied more in hope than anything else," he stated, highlighting the support he receives from his family as long as it does not interfere with his schooling.
As Fionn prepares to take the Woolly Woodland stage on Friday, July 4, he looks forward not only to showcasing his own talents but also to seeing one of his idols, Mark McCabe. "I really like his music, especially 'Maniac 2000'; it's a massive tune," he noted with enthusiasm.
The Stendhal Festival's lineup this year includes a variety of performances from artists like comedian Ed Byrne and electronic group The Orb, reflecting the festival's commitment to diversity in entertainment.
As DJ Fionn O'Kane gears up for his debut at this significant cultural event, his story serves as an inspiring reminder of the potential within young artists and the importance of community support in nurturing their talents. With the festival fast approaching, Fionn's journey will undoubtedly resonate with many aspiring musicians and their families, encouraging them to pursue their dreams against all odds.
