Vanessa Kirby Embraces Role of Sue Storm in MCU's 'Avengers: Doomsday'

In a recent interview, Vanessa Kirby, acclaimed for her role in 'The Crown,' expressed her enthusiasm for portraying Sue Storm, also known as the Invisible Woman, in Marvel Studios' highly anticipated film 'Avengers: Doomsday.' The film, which marks the official launch of Phase Six of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), has garnered significant attention as fans eagerly await its release.
Kirby revealed her initial surprise at how easily she committed to the MCU. She had previously starred in 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps,' where her character navigates the complexities of motherhood alongside her superpowers. 'When this one came around, I was so genuinely moved by the fact that this was a woman who was pregnant and was a new mother, and also has these superpowers,' Kirby stated during her appearance on the 'Happy Sad Confused' podcast hosted by Josh Horowitz. 'It helped me ground it in something — to try and understand what it would be like to have both those things happening at the same time was a challenge, but I was grateful for that because it rooted it in this kind of domesticity, in this family and home, which made it easier.'
Kirby's casting represents a pivotal moment for the character, who has undergone various transformations throughout her comic book history. The actress noted, 'I think it was because I really liked her so much and because I’d read so many of the comics and she goes through so many different iterations. She becomes Malice, this really dark version of herself for quite a long time, and then she renames herself Invisible Woman having been called Invisible Girl and she goes off with Psycho-Man, like her history is incredible.' This depth allows Kirby to explore the character's psychological aspects, including her struggles, such as a stillbirth, which adds complexity to her narrative.
Additionally, Kirby expressed her excitement about collaborating with her fellow cast members from 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps,' including Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. 'I knew I wouldn’t be without these three actors, and these three actors have genuinely become family,' she remarked, emphasizing the importance of camaraderie in the high-stakes environment of the MCU.
Regarding the filming of 'Avengers: Doomsday,' Kirby shared her positive experience, stating, 'I’m loving it, absolutely loving it. It’s been a complete privilege.' She noted that filming during her pregnancy has been a unique experience, describing it as the 'coolest' opportunity she has encountered in her career.
The film's director, Matt Shakman, has highlighted the film's role in transitioning from his project to the Russo Brothers' 2026 sequel. Though plot details remain closely guarded, it is known that the film will center around the iconic supervillain Dr. Doom, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. Kirby praised Downey Jr.'s leadership, stating, 'He’s the most incredible human being, soulful, deep, kind — he’s been an amazing leader to us considering we’re the newbies.'
As the MCU continues to expand, Kirby's portrayal of Sue Storm represents a significant evolution of the franchise. The excitement surrounding 'Avengers: Doomsday' indicates a promising future for the MCU, characterized by a blend of established and new characters working together to create compelling narratives. With a star-studded cast that includes Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, and many others, the film is poised to captivate audiences when it premieres. Kirby’s commitment to the role and her passion for the character suggest that 'Avengers: Doomsday' will not only be a critical chapter in the MCU but also a personal milestone for the actress herself.
