We Are Parable Secures Distribution for Joy Gharoro-Akpojotor's 'Dreamers'

We Are Parable, an independent film distribution company known for championing diverse narratives, has acquired the UK and Irish distribution rights for 'Dreamers', the debut feature film directed by Joy Gharoro-Akpojotor. The film, which explores the struggles of a Nigerian migrant in the UK, was produced by Emily Morgan for Quiddity Films and made its premiere in the Panorama section at this year's Berlinale film festival.
Gharoro-Akpojotor, who previously produced the critically acclaimed 'Blue Story', wrote and directed 'Dreamers'. The story centers on Isio, played by Ronkẹ Adékoluẹjo, who faces detention after living undocumented in the UK for two years. The film intricately weaves themes of queer love and defiance against a backdrop of systemic challenges faced by migrants. Isio's journey is further complicated by her friendship with Farah, portrayed by Ann Akinjirin, who offers an alternate perspective on navigating their harsh realities.
Carmen Thompson, Head of Distribution and Special Projects at We Are Parable, expressed pride in bringing 'Dreamers' to audiences across the UK and Ireland, emphasizing the film's powerful narrative and the importance of Gharoro-Akpojotor’s vision. She stated, "Joy’s vision is a deeply moving, urgent, and beautifully tender story of queer love and defiance, set against the backdrop of a system that often tries to erase both."
The acquisition of 'Dreamers' reflects We Are Parable's commitment to promoting authentic storytelling and amplifying underrepresented voices in cinema. The company has previously released notable titles including Savanah Leaf’s BAFTA-winning film 'Earth Mama' and Ramata-Toulaye Sy’s entry in the Cannes competition, 'Banel & Adama'. With this acquisition, 'Dreamers' becomes the third release from We Are Parable that features a Black woman director, aligning with their mission to support diverse filmmakers.
Gharoro-Akpojotor highlighted the alignment of her storytelling with We Are Parable's ethos, stating, "Their passion, vision, and commitment to celebrating diverse voices is truly inspiring. I feel incredibly fortunate to have them championing my debut film."
The film has already garnered attention in international markets, with separate distribution deals secured by J&J Films for the Benelux region and Salzgeber for German-speaking territories. The political and social themes explored in 'Dreamers' resonate within current global discourses on migration and asylum, making it a timely addition to contemporary cinema.
Looking forward, 'Dreamers' is set to be released in UK and Irish cinemas later this year, providing audiences with a unique perspective on the migrant experience through the lens of love and resilience. As the film industry continues to evolve, the importance of diverse narratives, such as that of 'Dreamers', remains crucial in fostering understanding and empathy in society. With its anticipated release, 'Dreamers' promises to not only entertain but also provoke thought and dialogue around critical social issues.
