Achieving Zero Dengue Deaths by 2030: A Collaborative Approach

In a recent summit held in Quezon City, health experts from across Asia emphasized that the ambitious global goal of achieving zero dengue-related deaths by 2030 is within reach, contingent upon robust multi-sectoral collaboration. The Asia Dengue Voice and Action (ADVA), a scientific working group advocating for dengue vaccination, underscored the urgency for implementing stronger policies to bolster resilience against this pervasive health threat.
The statement was made during the 8th Asia Dengue Summit, which brought together policymakers, health professionals, and advocates to discuss strategies for combating the escalating incidence of dengue fever, particularly in the Philippines, where cases have surged significantly. Dr. Ma. Rosario Capeding, an infectious disease expert and the summit’s organizing chair, asserted, "With dengue cases persistently growing in many parts of the world, including the Philippines, this summit delivers a unifying message: Dengue is preventable. Through scientific innovation and community partnerships, we can achieve zero dengue deaths."
According to a report by the World Health Organization (WHO), global dengue cases doubled within a year, exceeding 14 million in 2024, with Asia accounting for approximately 70% of this burden. In addition, dengue-related fatalities rose sharply from 7,300 to 10,000 during the same period. The economic impact of dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases is estimated to reach $3.1 billion (approximately P176.5 billion) annually, highlighting the critical need for effective control measures.
Dr. Fatima Gimenez, co-chair of the summit organizing committee, emphasized the necessity of collective action, stating, "Every sector has a part to play. Health workers, advocates, the public, and the media – we must unite to turn the tide on dengue." This sentiment aligns with the WHO's Global Strategy for Dengue Prevention and Control 2021-2030, which aims for zero preventable dengue deaths by the target year.
The summit serves as a platform for ongoing dialogue among various stakeholders and aims to foster sustained cross-sector partnerships. In line with this initiative, ADVA recently published a white paper titled "Unlocking Progress: Dengue Policies and Opportunities in Asia," advocating for stronger regional coordination and national accountability to enhance the management of dengue and protect vulnerable populations.
Specific recommendations for the Philippines include improving dengue prevention efforts through vaccination, enhancing the quality of care provided to patients, and combating misinformation regarding vaccines. Dr. Lulu Bravo, executive director of the Philippine Foundation for Vaccination, reiterated the cost-effectiveness of vaccination, stating, "The Philippines has battled dengue for over 70 years, yet we still lag behind in vaccination efforts."
A notable concern remains the vaccine hesitancy stemming from past controversies surrounding the Dengvaxia vaccine, which was linked to adverse outcomes in children. Professor Datuk Zulkifli Ismail, chair of the ADVA steering committee, noted the importance of healthcare professionals being well-informed about new-generation vaccines, emphasizing the need for transparent communication about their safety and efficacy. He stated, "We have years of data regarding this second-generation vaccine (Qdenga), and so far, no red flags have emerged."
Indonesian expert Dr. Tikki Pangetsu stressed that public trust in government health initiatives is crucial for the success of mass dengue vaccination campaigns. He remarked, "When the populace trusts their government, it significantly influences their willingness to be vaccinated."
As the summit concluded, its outcomes are expected to pave the way for a more resilient approach to tackling dengue, ultimately aiming for the eradication of preventable deaths. This collective engagement across sectors not only addresses immediate health concerns but also sets a precedent for future collaborative public health initiatives across the region.
