Kent Woman Raises Funds for Heart Disease Awareness After Father's Death

A woman from Herne Bay, Kent, is spearheading a fundraising initiative aimed at raising awareness about undetected heart disease, following the tragic death of her father. Michelle Brown, now 51, lost her father to coronary heart disease when she was just 21 years old. A post-mortem examination revealed he had severe heart issues, including a blood clot in his main artery, which ultimately led to his untimely death at the age of 46.

This personal tragedy has profoundly shaped Brown's life, motivating her to work with the cardiology team at the Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital (QEQM) in Margate. In her current role, she coordinates appointments for patients requiring pacemakers and other life-saving devices. Reflecting on her father's death, Brown stated, "I feel encouraged that if it had happened today, my dad would be able to have treatment and would most likely survive. He has missed out on so much—he never met my son and didn’t get to see me marry. But I hope by raising money, I can help other families avoid being in the same situation."

In October, Brown plans to participate in the Kent Downs 50 Challenge, a demanding 31-mile trek, to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation (BHF). She emphasized the importance of this effort, stating, "I don’t want anyone else to have to lose someone to heart disease if it can be prevented."

Her journey into healthcare began after a 30-year career in finance, transitioning to work as a healthcare assistant in the Deal ward at QEQM. However, back problems forced her to leave ward duties, leading her to her current administrative role. Brown expressed her optimism about advancements in cardiac care: "I have seen some of the scans available now and learned about the interventions that can save lives. So many people now survive heart disease, and I hope that by raising funds, we can contribute to more research, allowing even more to survive in the future."
