Mass Vaccination Advocated to Mitigate Rising Dengue Cases in the Philippines

On June 16, 2025, the Asia Dengue Voice and Action Group (ADVA) convened during the Asia Dengue Summit 2025 to address the critical surge in dengue fever cases across the Philippines. With over 100,000 cases reported in the first half of June alone, public health experts are emphasizing the urgent need for mass vaccination as a key strategy to combat the rising incidence of this mosquito-borne disease.

ADVA, a scientific consortium focused on translating dengue vaccine research into effective public health policies, highlighted that increasing public confidence in dengue vaccinations has reached approximately 85%, as noted by Dr. Lulu Bravo, a member of the summit's organizing committee. Dr. Bravo stated, “It is very important to listen to those who are vaccine hesitant. What we do for them is to give them some points in educating and empowering them.” This statement underscores the importance of addressing public concerns regarding vaccine safety and efficacy.

The summit also called for a resolution concerning the controversies surrounding the Dengvaxia vaccine, which has been a significant point of contention in the Philippines following reports of adverse effects in vaccinated individuals. ADVA advocates for the use of newer vaccine formulations, including QDENGA and CYD-TDV, to enhance immunization efforts.

The Department of Health (DOH) has supported ADVA’s initiatives and emphasizes the need for robust surveillance systems to monitor dengue cases. According to a report by the DOH, dengue cases have exhibited an alarming upward trend in recent years, prompting calls for heightened political will to implement effective interventions.

Dr. Marissa Santos, an epidemiologist at the University of the Philippines, noted, “To effectively combat dengue, we must not only focus on vaccinations but also enhance community awareness and environmental management to reduce mosquito breeding sites.” This multi-faceted approach aligns with WHO recommendations, which stress integrated strategies to manage vector-borne diseases.

The significant rise in dengue cases highlights the urgent public health challenge facing the Philippines, with experts warning that without immediate action, the situation could escalate further. As the government grapples with public hesitance towards vaccines, the need for transparent communication and comprehensive education campaigns has never been more critical.

Looking ahead, public health officials urge that sustained efforts in vaccination, alongside community engagement and environmental controls, are essential to mitigate the impacts of dengue fever in the Philippines. The collective responsibility of health authorities, policymakers, and communities is paramount in addressing this pressing health crisis.
