Measles Exposure Identified at Great Canadian Dollar Store in Thessalon

Algoma Public Health (APH) has announced a potential exposure site for measles at the Great Canadian Dollar Store, located at 208 Main St., Thessalon. The exposure occurred on June 26 from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. This announcement comes as health officials continue to monitor a rise in measles cases in the region, with 137 confirmed cases reported as of June 24, 2025, reflecting a 22-case increase since June 17.

Measles, a highly contagious viral infection, poses significant health risks, particularly to unvaccinated individuals. According to Dr. John Tuinema, Associate Medical Officer of Health at APH, the public health response has included detailed investigations to prevent the further spread of the virus. "People have been staying home when sick, and health-care providers have been implementing strong infection prevention and control practices," Dr. Tuinema stated in a recent interview. The rise in confirmed cases is concerning, especially given that measles was considered eliminated in Canada in the late 1990s.

The current outbreak has been predominantly linked to unvaccinated populations, as reported by Public Health Ontario. The organization indicated that the risk of measles transmission remains low for the general public, particularly for those who are vaccinated or have previously contracted the disease. However, the implications of this outbreak are pressing, especially considering that infants, pregnant individuals, and immunocompromised persons are at a higher risk of severe illness from the virus.

The symptoms of measles typically appear seven to 12 days after exposure and can include a runny nose, cough, fever, and a characteristic red rash. Serious complications such as pneumonia and encephalitis may arise in some cases. The MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine is recommended as the best preventive measure, providing nearly 100% protection with two doses. APH continues to encourage residents to review their immunization status and to contact health-care providers if they believe they may have been exposed.

In light of this outbreak, public health officials are urging those who visited the Great Canadian Dollar Store during the specified timeframe to remain vigilant for symptoms and to seek medical advice if necessary. The APH has been proactive in addressing the outbreak, and the cooperation of the community is essential in controlling the spread of this infectious disease.

For further details on vaccination and measles exposure, residents can visit the Algoma Public Health website or contact their local health-care provider. The ongoing investigation aims to ensure the safety of the public as health officials work to mitigate the impacts of this resurgence of measles in Ontario.
