Surge in Flu and Dengue Cases Following Heavy Rains in Telangana

In Telangana, medical professionals have issued urgent warnings as flu and dengue cases surge after recent heavy rainfall. As stagnant water becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes, health experts stress the importance of preventive measures to combat these seasonal diseases. According to Dr. Sowmya Bondalapati, a consultant in general medicine, the rise in viral infections has been alarming. "In the past three to four days, we have noted an increase in dengue cases, with two to three patients presenting daily, along with an influx of outpatient consultations for persistent high-grade fevers, severe headaches, nausea, and dehydration," she stated.

The ongoing monsoon season has resulted in significant water stagnation, leading to increased contamination of food and water supplies. Dr. Shiv Raju, a senior consultant physician, has warned of a corresponding rise in hospital admissions related to dengue, especially among professionals and VIPs. "We are observing patients with high-grade fevers, intolerable headaches, and declining platelet counts. Although most cases are currently manageable, we anticipate a higher caseload in the coming weeks," he remarked. He also highlighted a few malaria cases detected recently, underscoring the urgent need for public vigilance.

In response to the rising cases, the director of public health and family welfare has released a public health advisory. Dr. Shraddha Sanghani, a consultant in internal medicine, noted that many flu-like cases are presenting with mild symptoms such as cold and cough. However, she cautioned that COVID-19 should not be entirely ruled out. Testing remains focused on elderly patients with severe symptoms, while others are treated based on clinical suspicion.

Health experts collectively recommend maintaining high hygiene standards, including regular handwashing and consuming clean, preferably boiled water. They emphasize avoiding raw or uncooked food and using mosquito repellents. Citizens are urged to wear full-sleeved clothing and eliminate water stagnation in their surroundings. Furthermore, individuals experiencing flu-like symptoms are advised to practice social distancing and seek immediate medical care if their fever persists for more than a day. The collective message from the health community is clear: proactive measures are essential to mitigate the impact of these seasonal diseases and safeguard public health.
