Swedish Initiative Aims to Combat Obesity and Metabolic Disorders

A new research initiative focused on obesity and metabolic diseases has been launched by the University of Gothenburg in collaboration with AstraZeneca, supported by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation and Region Västra Götaland. This initiative aims to enhance understanding of metabolic disorders and develop effective treatments, with a substantial budget of SEK 200 million allocated over ten years, starting in 2026.

The prevalence of obesity has reached epidemic levels globally, creating significant health challenges and economic burdens. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), obesity is a major risk factor for numerous chronic diseases, including cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes (WHO, 2022). The newly formed research group will target these issues by investigating the underlying mechanisms of obesity and related metabolic syndromes.

The initiative includes a newly established professorship and research group, with the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation contributing SEK 50 million, AstraZeneca providing SEK 100 million, and both the University of Gothenburg and Region Västra Götaland each allocating SEK 25 million. Regina Fritsche-Danielson, Senior Vice President and Global Head of Research and Early Clinical Development at AstraZeneca, emphasized the need for a deeper understanding of cellular mechanisms driving these diseases across various populations, stating, "To meet the needs of different patient groups, we need to understand the cellular mechanisms that drive disease development in different populations and develop medical drugs that are tailored accordingly" (Fritsche-Danielson, AstraZeneca, 2025).

Jenny Nyström, Professor and Dean at the Sahlgrenska Academy, highlighted the strategic importance of this initiative for the University of Gothenburg, asserting that it will create opportunities for productive collaboration among the involved parties. "The focus of the research will be to deepen the understanding of the mechanisms behind obesity and cardiovascular complications in order to develop future treatments that are both safe and effective" (Nyström, University of Gothenburg, 2025).

The complexity of metabolic disorders poses significant challenges, impacting not only individual health but also the national economy. The initiative is positioned to address one of the most pressing public health problems of our time through a collaborative approach that harnesses the strengths of academia, industry, and regional healthcare systems. Helén Eliasson, President of the Regional Executive Board at Region Västra Götaland, remarked, "Together, we are tackling one of the biggest public health problems of our time and we are doing so with the aim of creating benefits both for our residents and for patients around the world" (Eliasson, Region Västra Götaland, 2025).

The collaboration aims to establish Sweden as a leader in life sciences by fostering innovative research and development in this critical field. With the support of the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, which has invested approximately SEK 10 billion in Swedish life science research over the past 25 years, this initiative is expected to further enhance Sweden's strong position in metabolic research (Mazur, Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, 2025).

As the research program commences in 2026, experts anticipate that it will lead to significant advancements in understanding and treating obesity and its associated metabolic conditions. This initiative not only promises to contribute to scientific knowledge but also aims to translate findings into practical solutions for patients suffering from obesity-related health issues, thereby addressing a critical public health concern on both national and global scales.
