Annual Beau’s 5K Raises Over $50,000 for Ovarian Cancer Research

On June 21, 2025, the annual Beau’s 5K for Ovarian Cancer took place in Vankleek Hill, Ontario, raising more than $50,000 for vital research initiatives. This event, which has become a hallmark of community support, was inspired by the late Ashley Courtois (Cowan), who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2015. Following her passing in 2018, the event has continued to honor her legacy and raise awareness about this often-overlooked disease.

According to Maddy Graves, a representative from Ovarian Cancer Canada, this year’s run saw participation from over 350 individuals, with 300 registering in advance. "There is no fundraiser like the Beau’s 5K anywhere else in Canada. This is just a different vibe and atmosphere," said Graves. Notably, 3,000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer annually in Canada, and regrettably, half of those diagnosed will not survive beyond five years. Graves emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, "It’s the deadliest women’s cancer. There is no screening test for ovarian cancer, and most women are diagnosed at stage three or four."

Funds raised from events like the Beau’s 5K are crucial for research dedicated to developing screening tests, which could dramatically change the prognosis for those affected by the disease. The event has garnered significant community support, reflecting a growing awareness regarding ovarian cancer and the need for research funding. As part of broader public health initiatives, the Beau’s 5K not only commemorates Ashley Courtois but also serves as a critical platform for raising awareness and advocating for necessary medical advancements.

The continued success of the Beau’s 5K illustrates the collective effort of the community in fighting against ovarian cancer. As the event grows year by year, it fosters a sense of unity and purpose, encouraging more people to participate and contribute to a cause that affects many families across Canada. The implications of such community-driven initiatives extend beyond immediate fundraising, as they play a pivotal role in educating the public about the realities of ovarian cancer and the importance of early diagnosis and research funding. Looking forward, organizers hope to expand participation and increase funding, ultimately contributing to the development of effective screening methods and improving survival rates for women diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
