Bulacan Municipalities on High Alert Amid Dam Water Releases
BULACAN, Philippines – Ten municipalities in Bulacan have been placed under alert status following the overflow of water from the Bustos Dam and controlled releases from the Ipo Dam, as announced by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO). The warning was issued on October 20, 2023, amid ongoing concerns regarding flood risks in the region due to heavy rainfall.
Mayor Charo Sy-Alvarado of Hagonoy has taken proactive measures by mobilizing relief efforts for families affected by the flooding. According to the PDRRMO, the municipalities affected include Hagonoy, Calumpit, and several others. The mayor emphasized the importance of community preparedness and urged residents to remain vigilant as the water levels continue to be monitored closely.
In a statement, Governor Daniel Fernando expressed his commitment to ensuring the safety of Bulacan residents. "We are coordinating with local disaster response teams to guarantee that necessary precautions are being taken, and assistance is readily available to those in need," he said. This collaboration includes the distribution of relief goods and the establishment of evacuation centers for displaced families.
According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the region has experienced substantial rainfall, leading to increased water levels in local rivers and dams. PAGASA’s latest data indicates that the Ipo Dam reached near its normal high water level, prompting the necessary water releases to mitigate potential overflow.
In addition to local government responses, experts from the University of the Philippines' National College of Public Administration and Governance have underscored the need for long-term flood management strategies. Dr. Maria Elena Dela Cruz, a leading researcher in disaster management, stated, "The recurring flooding issues in Bulacan highlight the urgent need for sustainable water management practices and infrastructure improvements to better handle extreme weather events."
The situation remains dynamic, with local authorities continuously assessing the risks and implementing precautionary measures. As the days progress, residents are advised to stay updated through official channels and heed warnings from local government officials.
The recent events in Bulacan reflect a broader trend of increased flooding risks across the Philippines, attributed to climate change and urban development pressures. The government is urged to invest in more resilient infrastructure and disaster preparedness programs to protect vulnerable communities from future flooding incidents.
As Bulacan faces these challenges, the focus remains on ensuring public safety and enhancing community resilience against natural disasters. The collaboration between local government units and academic institutions is seen as a crucial step in addressing these pressing concerns effectively.
