Cork Craft Month 2025: A Celebration of Local Artisans and Events

As Cork Craft Month commences from July 31 to August 31, 2025, the festival promises an expansive program celebrating local artisans and their crafts. This year marks a significant milestone, as it is the 20th anniversary of Cork Craft & Design, the organization that has united craft makers across the region. Ava Hayes, the festival director, expressed enthusiasm for this year’s events, highlighting two showcase exhibitions: the 'Emerge' graduate exhibition at 46 Grand Parade featuring 20 new craft makers and a showcase at Fota House celebrating long-term members of Cork Craft & Design. "It’s like asking me to pick my favorite child,” she noted when discussing her preferred events.
The Cork Craft Month features a total of 99 events, with 80% being hands-on workshops where participants can engage directly with makers. Fergal O’Leary, a furniture maker and one of the early members of Cork Craft & Design, emphasized the importance of these workshops: “They’re very engaging. You come away with something more than a cup, something that lasts longer in your consciousness.” This sentiment reflects a growing public awareness of the craft industry’s value, supported by the proliferation of online platforms that allow artisans to market their work effectively.
Additionally, the Cork Craft & Design shop, located at St Patrick’s Woollen Mills in Douglas, along with a pop-up shop at Douglas Court Shopping Centre, has enhanced the visibility of local crafts. These venues not only provide a platform for selling crafts but also serve as informal gathering spaces where artisans can connect with the public. O’Leary noted, “You see how people want to touch things, the wood, the bowls,” indicating a personal connection between the maker and the consumer.
Ava Hayes encourages potential visitors to explore the exhibitions with an open heart, suggesting they start their journey at St Peter’s and Fota House. “Take a trip to Kilcoe Studios in Ballydehob for live events and family activities,” she advised. This year’s events range from ceramics to wood-turned objects, with prices accommodating various budgets, ensuring accessibility for all attendees.
The festival not only serves as a platform for local artisans but has also inspired similar craft events nationwide, contributing to the broader cultural landscape of Ireland. As the month unfolds, Cork Craft Month is set to create lasting memories and foster deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship and stories behind each piece.
In conclusion, Cork Craft Month 2025 stands as a testament to the resilience and creativity of local artisans, setting a precedent that could influence craft events throughout the country in years to come. With a robust schedule and a focus on community engagement, this festival embodies the spirit of craftsmanship and its vital role in cultural identity.
