Cork's An Spailpín Fánach Pub Listed for Sale as Owner Retires

CORK, IRELAND — An Spailpín Fánach, a beloved pub in Cork city center, has been officially listed for sale with an asking price exceeding €1.5 million. The decision to sell comes after the owner, John O’Connor, announced his retirement following a distinguished career spanning 34 years in the hospitality industry. The pub, which first opened its doors in 1779, holds a significant place in Cork's vibrant bar scene and has been a family-run establishment since 1991.
Located on South Main Street, An Spailpín Fánach features two bars, totaling approximately 442 square meters, and includes a private function room on the first floor. The sale also encompasses three fully rented two-bedroom apartments located above the pub, along with a seven-day publican's license. This strategic combination of commercial and residential elements highlights the venue's value in the current real estate market.
Mr. O’Connor, a native of Douglas, expressed a mix of nostalgia and satisfaction as he reflected on his decades of operation. "We worked hard at it over the last 34 years — we kept it traditional, we don’t have TVs; it’s all music and singing," he stated in an interview with The Echo. He emphasized the significance of passing the business on to a younger publican who could bring fresh ideas to the establishment.
The pub has been a cornerstone of the local community, attracting a diverse clientele, including notable figures such as football legend Paul McGrath and musicians like Sharon Shannon. Mr. O’Connor remarked on the many highlights of his tenure, stating, "We had lots of highlights; we had some great customers."
According to the DNG Estate Agents, which is handling the sale, the asking price reflects not only the prime location but also the establishment's strong reputation and long-standing heritage. The listing has generated interest from potential buyers looking to continue An Spailpín Fánach's legacy in the heart of Cork.
The decision to retire is a personal one for Mr. O’Connor, who stated, "I think it’ll be better for a younger person to come in and take up the reins. I’ll do nothing for a while; working every weekend for the last 30 years catches up with you." As he prepares for life after the pub, he remains optimistic about the future of An Spailpín Fánach and its potential to thrive under new ownership.
