Department of Health Bicol Intensifies Anti-Smoking Campaign Amid Health Concerns

LEGAZPI CITY – The Department of Health in Bicol (DOH-5) is intensifying its anti-smoking initiatives in response to rising health concerns associated with tobacco and vaping, coinciding with the observance of National No Smoking Month. This campaign aims to significantly reduce tobacco consumption and promote healthier lifestyles among the populace.

The DOH-5 has initiated a comprehensive training program titled "Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs)" that is currently underway and will conclude on Friday. This program is designed to equip healthcare professionals in the Bicol region with essential skills to advocate for healthy living and manage NCDs effectively at the community level. "DOH-5 remains committed to achieving a 100 percent smoke-free region. Through the National Tobacco Control and Prevention Program, we aim to decrease the prevalence of tobacco use by 30 percent in collaboration with inter-agency smoke-free committees and implementing regulatory policies regarding tobacco and vape products," stated Dr. Maria Santos, Regional Director of DOH-5, in an official press release dated June 24, 2025.

In alignment with these goals, the agency is actively coordinating with local government units (LGUs) to enforce "Comprehensive Smoke and Vape Free Ordinances." These ordinances prohibit the use of tobacco products, vapes, and e-cigarettes in public spaces, including schools, healthcare facilities, and workplaces. Dr. Santos highlighted the importance of these regulations in creating a healthier environment for all residents.

Moreover, the DOH-5 is providing accessible smoking cessation services at local health facilities. Individuals seeking assistance in quitting smoking can access free early detection services, counseling, and risk assessments. The agency encourages all Bicolanos to contact the DOH Quitline at 1558 for support. Dr. Santos emphasized that quitting tobacco use is vital for preventing diseases and improving health outcomes, alongside maintaining a balanced diet, engaging in regular physical activity, and ensuring adequate rest.

According to data from the Field Health Services Information System (FHSIS), approximately 197,030 Bicolanos aged between 20 and 59 were identified as tobacco users in 2024. Additionally, there is a concerning prevalence of smoking among older adults, with 29,864 individuals aged 60 and above reported as current smokers in the same year. This data underscores the urgent need for intensified anti-smoking campaigns and health promotion activities in the region.

In conclusion, the DOH-5's efforts during National No Smoking Month signify a critical step towards improving public health in Bicol. As these initiatives unfold, they aim not only to reduce tobacco consumption but also to foster a culture of health and well-being throughout the community.
