Dylan Harper's Filipino Heritage: A Family Tradition of Values

In a recent interview, Maria Pizarro, mother of NBA rookie Dylan Harper, highlighted how Filipino values have profoundly influenced their family dynamics and shaped Dylan's journey in basketball. Maria, who immigrated to the United States from Bataan, Philippines at the age of seven, emphasized the importance of cultural traditions in their household, particularly during significant celebrations like Christmas.
Dylan Harper, a 19-year-old player recently drafted second overall by the San Antonio Spurs in the 2025 NBA Draft, embodies a new wave of Filipino-American athletes in the league. Alongside players like Jalen Green and Jordan Clarkson, who have both made notable connections with their Filipino heritage, Dylan has yet to visit the Philippines. However, his familial ties remain strong, as Maria recounts the practices that keep their culture alive.
"We are very in touch with our Filipino side. My mom, my dad, and my three sisters have been a really big part of my children’s lives. We have Filipino traditions," Maria shared after attending Dylan's first game in the NBA Summer League. She recalls the elaborate celebrations of Christmas in the Philippines, describing it as a month-long festivity filled with family gatherings and traditional foods, a stark contrast to how they celebrate in the United States.
The Harpers have integrated Filipino customs into their daily lives, as Maria explained, "Going to church for Sunday, going to lola for Sunday dinner, also the things that we want to do for our kids. We made a really big imprint on all three of my children, Ronald, Dylan, and Mia." This emphasis on family cohesion is a hallmark of Filipino culture, evident as the family rallied to support Dylan during his NBA debut.
Maria further articulated the family's commitment to maintaining their cultural heritage. "We promised each other for our favorite holiday, Christmas, that whoever can’t come home, we were going to bring the whole band wherever they were," she said, indicating a dedication to unity despite geographical distances.
As Filipino basketball fans eagerly anticipate Dylan’s connection to their homeland, Maria hinted at a potential visit next summer, stating, "To all the Filipino basketball fans, we’re looking forward to visiting you guys next summer." This acknowledgment of their roots, coupled with the family's strong values, positions Dylan Harper as not just an athlete but also a representative of Filipino culture in the global sports arena.
The representation of Filipino heritage in the NBA is significant, as it fosters a sense of pride among fans in the Philippines. Players like Dylan not only pave the way for future generations but also serve to strengthen the bonds between the Filipino diaspora and their homeland. As the Harpers continue to navigate their journey in the spotlight, the deep-seated values of family and tradition will undoubtedly guide their path forward.
