Governor Lacson Highlights Resilience of Negros Occidental Residents on Independence Day

BACOLOD CITY – On June 12, 2025, Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson of Negros Occidental delivered a poignant tribute to the resilience of the province's residents during the Independence Day celebrations, reflecting on the challenges posed by the ongoing threat of the Kanlaon Volcano. This year's commemoration comes nearly a year after the volcano's eruption on June 3, 2024, which has significantly impacted the lives of thousands within the province.

In his address, Lacson stated, "It’s been a year already since the first Kanlaon eruption, and we saw a lot of heroes – our front liners, and we are very thankful to our modern heroes." His remarks came amidst the backdrop of continuing volcanic activity that has led to the evacuation of residents across three local government units (LGUs) in Negros Occidental. Despite the persistent threat of a major eruption, some internally displaced persons (IDPs) have begun returning to their homes, fostering hope for a return to normalcy.

Governor Lacson expressed gratitude towards first responders, healthcare workers, volunteers, and ordinary citizens who have risen to meet extraordinary challenges. "You embody the same spirit that guided our heroes more than a century ago," he remarked. He emphasized the importance of resilience, stating that the historical struggle for independence serves as a reminder of the strength required to overcome contemporary adversities.

As Negros Occidental celebrated its 127th Independence Day, Lacson reaffirmed a collective commitment to honor the past and strive for a future marked by prosperity and peace. He stated, "To honor our past with remembrance; to guard our freedom with vigilance; and to build a future of prosperity and peace for all Filipinos." He articulated the necessity for ongoing vigilance in safeguarding the freedoms gained through the sacrifices of previous generations.

The governor further noted that the challenges faced today, including poverty, inequality, corruption, environmental degradation, and social divisions, demand a concerted effort. "The vision that inspired our forebears remains unfinished, the vision of a truly prosperous, equitable, and inclusive Philippines, where no Filipino is left behind," he added.

In a parallel celebration, Bacolod City, under the leadership of Mayor-elect Greg Gasataya, hosted a civic-military parade at the city public plaza. Gasataya underscored the importance of remembering the sacrifices made by earlier generations for independence, urging attendees to reflect deeply on these contributions.

As the province commemorates this significant date, both leaders call for a unified effort to address ongoing challenges while honoring the legacy of the nation's heroes. The events of June 12 serve not only as a celebration of independence but as a rallying cry for resilience and collective responsibility in the face of adversity.

This year's Independence Day celebrations in Negros Occidental have thus become a poignant reminder of the intertwining of history, resilience, and the ongoing quest for societal improvement, as the region continues to navigate the complexities brought about by natural disasters and socio-economic challenges.
