Kieran Donaghy Steps Down as Armagh Football Selector After Five Years

Kieran Donaghy has officially stepped down from his role as selector and forwards coach for the Armagh senior football team, a position he has held for five impactful years. The Tralee native played a pivotal role in Armagh's historic All-Ireland victory in 2024, the county's second championship title, before announcing his departure to manager Kieran McGeeney last week. Donaghy's tenure has been marked by a grueling 500-mile round-trip commute, which he undertook regularly, contributing significantly to the team's successes during his time.
In a heartfelt announcement shared on social media platform X, Donaghy expressed his deep gratitude for the experiences and relationships he forged during his time with the team. He stated, "Five incredible years with Armagh GAA have come to an end, and I walk away full of pride, memories, and deep gratitude." He particularly thanked manager Kieran McGeeney for believing in him as a rookie coach, emphasizing the mutual support they shared throughout his tenure.
Donaghy's coaching journey with Armagh began in 2021, initially intended as a one-season commitment. However, following unforeseen circumstances due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he continued with the team, guiding them to various critical milestones, including the All-Ireland quarter-finals and ultimately the championship victory in 2024. His coaching style has been characterized by a blend of tactical acumen and a supportive presence, earning him respect and admiration from players and management alike.
Team coach Ciaran McKeever remarked on Donaghy's contribution, stating, “He brings so many things to the table. He’s great to be around but he’s also an excellent coach with a great head for the game.”
The Armagh County Board released a statement thanking Donaghy for his "incredible impact" over the years. They noted that his unwavering belief in the team helped shape their identity and resilience, culminating in the achievement of their second All-Ireland title. The board highlighted that the energy and passion he brought to training and games were inspiring for all involved.
Looking ahead, it is anticipated that McGeeney will continue as Armagh's manager for a 12th season, alongside most of his coaching staff. Donaghy's departure leaves a significant gap, but it also opens the door for potential new coaching opportunities, possibly closer to his home in Kerry, where speculation suggests he may be involved with underage teams.
As Donaghy steps away, he leaves behind a legacy of perseverance and a commitment to excellence, one that will resonate within the Armagh GAA community for years to come. His career highlights, including the championship win, will be fondly remembered by both players and supporters alike.
