New Spacecraft Manufacturing Facility Launched in Sydney, Australia

In a significant advancement for Australia's burgeoning space industry, the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and Space Machines Company (SMC) have collaborated to establish a new industrial-scale spacecraft manufacturing facility, dubbed the Optimus Factory (OF-01). This facility, located at the UTS Tech Lab in Sydney, is expected to become operational by late 2025 and will enable the design, assembly, and testing of 300kg-class spacecraft at scale.

Michael Blumenstein, Pro Vice Chancellor at UTS, emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating, "This partnership is focused on joint research and development, enabling UTS and SMC to shape the future of the space industry in Australia and globally." The facility will encompass an 800-square-meter production space, including a cleanroom dedicated to satellite Assembly, Integration, and Testing (AIT).

The establishment of this facility represents a critical step towards enhancing Australia's sovereign capabilities in space technology. Historically, Australia has relied heavily on overseas suppliers for its space assets and technology, which has limited the nation's strategic autonomy and industrial development. "By establishing local manufacturing capabilities, we’re creating high-skilled jobs and retaining intellectual property within our borders, ensuring Australia can independently develop, produce, and deploy the space infrastructure essential for our future security and prosperity," said a spokesperson from SMC.

This development aligns with the Australian government's vision of promoting local manufacturing as part of its Future Made in Australia initiative, which seeks to bolster domestic industrial capacity in critical technologies. The Optimus Factory will support both defence requirements and commercial applications, thereby contributing to national security while fostering economic growth.
