Search Intensifies for Missing German Backpacker in WA's Wheatbelt

A nationwide search is currently underway for Carolina Wilga, a 26-year-old German backpacker who disappeared in Western Australia’s Wheatbelt region. Last seen on June 29, 2025, in Beacon—approximately 300 kilometers northeast of Perth—Wilga's sudden disappearance has prompted extensive police efforts and public appeals for information about her whereabouts.
According to Detective Senior Sergeant Katharine Venn of the Western Australia Police, Wilga was last spotted at a local general store shortly after noon on the day of her disappearance. She had arrived in a distinctive black-and-silver 1995 Mitsubishi van, which bears the registration number 1HDS 330. Prior to her last known location, she was reportedly seen at a convenience store in Toodyay and had traveled through Dowerin on June 28.
The search area for Wilga has been described as 'vast' by authorities, with ongoing efforts extending across various regional areas of Western Australia, including coastal towns such as Albany, Esperance, and Margaret River. Senior Sergeant Venn noted, "She may have intended to travel over east and so therefore our search is vast. We are considering information from any state and territory in terms of sightings or information related to her whereabouts."
Search efforts are being supported by helicopters and planes, which have been deployed to scour the remote landscapes surrounding Beacon. The terrain, characterized by sparse vegetation and salt lakes, presents significant challenges for search teams. Venn emphasized that although there are no signs of foul play at this stage, the investigation remains open to all possibilities. She stated, “Our minds are open to any line of inquiry or any information that people bring forward to us.”
Wilga, who has been backpacking across Australia for the past two years, had recently worked on mine sites in regional areas. The police have highlighted that she maintained regular contact with her family until June 18, after which communication ceased. Her distinctive appearance includes brown curly hair, brown eyes, and several tattoos, including a notable symbol on her left forearm.
Western Australian Commissioner Col Blanch has confirmed that the major crime squad, which typically investigates homicides and other serious offences, has joined the case. Blanch reassured that this development does not imply any confirmed foul play but reflects the serious concerns surrounding Wilga’s disappearance. "That doesn’t mean it’s a homicide at this point," he remarked. "But we’ve certainly got our very best capabilities doing that investigation because we do have serious concerns."
The local community and authorities are urging anyone with information, including CCTV footage from the Beacon or surrounding areas between June 29 and July 4, to contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000. As the search continues, the hope remains that Wilga can be located safely and reunited with her family and friends. This case highlights not only the risks faced by travelers in remote areas but also the collaborative efforts of police and community members in search and rescue operations.
This incident follows the earlier disappearance of another individual, Barry Podmore, whose vehicle was discovered about 40 kilometers from Beacon in May. However, police have clarified that the cases are being treated as separate investigations.
The ongoing search for Carolina Wilga serves as a solemn reminder of the potential dangers that can accompany exploration in isolated regions and underscores the importance of public vigilance in such circumstances.
