Three Molasses Barges Run Aground in Batangas: Crew Safe, Minor Leak Reported

On July 19, 2025, three molasses-laden barges ran aground off the shoreline of Barangay Talisay in Calaca City, Batangas, as reported by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG). The incident involved Barge EE Margarette, Barge Amazon River, and Barge Yangtze River, which were carrying a total of approximately 4,801 metric tons of molasses. Fortunately, all 21 crew members aboard these vessels were reported safe and accounted for following the grounding.

The PCG stated that the barges were en route to discharge their cargo at designated delivery points in Balayan. However, adverse weather conditions, particularly the effects of Tropical Storm Crising, forced the vessels to seek shelter. The storm reportedly caused the mooring lines of the barges to snap, leading to their drift ashore.

According to Captain Maria Santos, spokesperson for the PCG, "The vessels were driven ashore due to unfavorable sea conditions, and a minor leak was confirmed from Barge EE Margarette, which sustained hull damage after colliding with Barge Amazon River."

Environmental assessments conducted by the Marine Science Investigation Group – Southern Tagalog determined that the leak posed no immediate threat to marine life or public safety. The report noted only slight discoloration and odor in the affected area, which is characterized by a non-coral, sandy shoreline not typically used for fishing activities. Dr. Luis Fernandez, an environmental scientist at the University of the Philippines, emphasized, "Molasses is generally considered non-hazardous and should dissipate naturally, minimizing environmental impact."

The vessel owners have been advised to coordinate with local authorities in Calaca City and to file a marine protest. Plans for the immediate refloating and removal of the grounded barges are underway, with tugboats Robina I and Robina II currently on standby at the Balayan Anchorage Area awaiting improved weather conditions for towing operations.

This incident highlights ongoing challenges faced by maritime operations in the Philippines, particularly during adverse weather. The PCG continues to monitor the situation closely, ensuring that safety protocols are adhered to in the aftermath of the grounding. As the maritime industry grapples with increasing storm intensity linked to climate change, experts urge for enhanced preparedness and robust infrastructure to mitigate similar occurrences in the future.
