Tragic Building Collapse in Karachi Claims Lives of Eight Residents

Shankar Kamho, a resident who was not at home during the incident, received a distressing call from his wife, who reported that the building was exhibiting signs of structural failure. Despite her attempts to alert neighbors, many were skeptical of the imminent danger. "She went to warn the neighbors, but one woman told her, 'this building will stand for at least 10 more years.' Still, my wife took our daughter and left. About 20 minutes later, the building collapsed," Kamho recounted to Agence France-Presse (AFP).

Saad Edhi, a representative of the Edhi welfare foundation involved in the rescue efforts, estimated that as many as 10 additional individuals could still be trapped inside the wreckage. He characterized the building as a “worn-out structure,” emphasizing the dire need for improved construction standards and safety measures in the region.

Building collapses have become distressingly common in Pakistan, where many structures are constructed using substandard materials, and regulatory oversight is often lax. A similar incident in June 2020 led to the deaths of 22 individuals when another apartment building collapsed in the city.
