AeroVironment Unveils Innovative Skyfall Mars Helicopter Concept

AeroVironment, a leading US defense contractor, has introduced a groundbreaking concept for a Mars helicopter, named Skyfall, which aims to facilitate NASA's human missions to the Red Planet by 2028. This announcement was made on July 25, 2025, as part of the company’s ongoing collaboration with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). The Skyfall helicopter is designed to scout resources and potential landing sites, thereby preparing the way for astronauts who may set foot on Mars within the decade.
The Skyfall concept builds on the success of AeroVironment’s previous Mars helicopter, Ingenuity, which became the first aircraft to achieve powered flight on another planet in April 2021. The new Skyfall helicopter will deploy six autonomous rotorcraft capable of operating independently, relaying high-resolution images and subsurface radar data back to Earth.
