Australian Schools Represent at Inaugural NBA Rising Stars Invitational

Basketball Australia announced the participation of Victoria’s Berwick College and Flinders College in the inaugural NBA Rising Stars Invitational, set to take place in Singapore from June 25 to 29, 2024. This event will feature 23 boys’ and girls’ teams from 11 Asia-Pacific countries, showcasing the region's young basketball talent as part of a broader entertainment initiative by the NBA.

The invitation to these schools comes after their impressive performances at the 2024 Australian School Championships, where they claimed the Under-17 Division 1 Championship titles. Sarah Monck, Head of Events at Basketball Australia, emphasized the significance of this recognition, stating, "When the NBA approached us to nominate teams, we knew we had to send our very best. Both Berwick and Flinders delivered standout performances at last year’s Australian School Championships, and this is a well-deserved opportunity. It’s an experience these young athletes will never forget, and a proud moment for their schools and the broader Australian basketball community."

Flinders College Basketball Academy Team Manager, Natalie Chatfield, expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity, remarking, "Our team is beyond excited to participate in the NBA Rising Stars Invitational. It’s a dream opportunity that reflects not just their ability, but their commitment to growth, teamwork and leadership. They’re honoured to represent Australia on the world stage."

Meanwhile, Shannan Davey, Assistant Director of the Basketball Academy at Berwick College, viewed the invitation as a defining milestone for their program. "This is a huge milestone for our program. The players have worked tirelessly, and to now be recognized internationally is a true testament to their commitment and the strength of the Academy at Berwick College. We’re incredibly proud of what they’ve achieved,"

The NBA Rising Stars Invitational will begin with a group stage utilizing a round-robin format from June 25 to 27, followed by semi-finals and final games on June 28 and 29. In addition to competition, the event will include skill development sessions, cultural exchanges, and community-focused activities, enhancing the overall experience for the young athletes.

This event marks a significant opportunity for the participating teams, highlighting the growing prominence of school-level basketball in Australia and its potential to foster international talent. As the basketball landscape continues to evolve, such platforms are crucial for nurturing the next generation of athletes, preparing them for future endeavors in the sport and beyond.
