Black Ferns Announce 33-Player Squad for Women's Rugby World Cup 2025

The Black Ferns, New Zealand's six-time champions, have officially announced their 33-player squad for the Women's Rugby World Cup 2025, set to take place in England starting August 22. This announcement comes ahead of their final training camp in Wellington, which precedes their departure for England on August 13.

Led by coaches Allan Bunting, Tony Christie, Steve Jackson, Dan Cron, and Riki Flutey, the selected squad comprises 19 forwards and 14 backs, marking a blend of seasoned veterans and emerging talent. Notably, Kelly Brazier is poised to participate in her fourth Rugby World Cup, while Portia Woodman-Wickliffe, Theresa Setefano, and Stacey Waaka will be competing in their third.

A significant highlight of this selection is the inclusion of 16 players returning from the last tournament held in New Zealand three years ago, underscoring the continuity and experience within the team. Co-captains Ruahei Demant and Kennedy Tukuafu are among these returning players, providing leadership and stability.

Among the newcomers is 18-year-old Braxton Sorensen-McGee, the youngest member of the squad, who is set to make her tournament debut alongside Laura Bayfield, who earned her first cap in a recent test against Australia. The selection also features Jorja Miller, World Rugby Women’s Sevens Player of the Year, and Risaleaana Pouri-Lane, both of whom have transitioned successfully from the sevens format to the 15-a-side game.

In a statement following the announcement, Coach Allan Bunting expressed his enthusiasm: "On behalf of the coaching group, I’d like to congratulate all our players named tonight in front of their whānau. We are really excited about this group and truly believe they can take us to the next level."

Bunting further acknowledged the players who were not selected, stating, "Their contribution to the black jersey and to our team this year has been immense, and we wouldn’t be where we are today without them." He emphasized the depth and competition within the wider squad, highlighting the growing recognition and future potential of women’s rugby in New Zealand.

The Black Ferns will compete in Pool C during the tournament, facing off against Spain in York on August 24, Japan in Exeter on August 31, and Ireland in Brighton on September 7. This strategic placement aims to leverage their experience and skill against competitive teams.

As the Black Ferns prepare for their title defense, they not only aim to uphold their legacy but also to inspire the next generation of female rugby players, reinforcing New Zealand's commitment to promoting women’s sports.
