Commanders GM Adam Peters Addresses Trump's Comments Amid Training Camp

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — The Washington Commanders have returned to the spotlight, but not solely for their athletic endeavors. As the NFL team's training camp kicks off, President Donald Trump's recent remarks regarding the franchise's name and a potential stadium deal have stirred discussions. Commanders General Manager Adam Peters addressed media concerns during a news conference on July 22, 2025, emphasizing a commitment to focus on football rather than outside distractions.

"Whether it’s the stadium or anything else (non-football-related), those things don’t really make it to us," Peters stated. He reaffirmed the team's objective, which centers around preparations for the upcoming season, rather than engaging in external controversies.

Trump's comments on social media suggested he may impose restrictions on the Commanders' anticipated agreement with the District of Columbia government for a new stadium unless the team reverts to its former name, the 'Washington Redskins'. This name change, implemented in 2020 under previous owner Dan Snyder, was a response to widespread criticism regarding its offensiveness to Native American communities.

The current team ownership, led by managing partner Josh Harris, has firmly stated that the name 'Commanders' will remain. In February, Harris expressed confidence in the team's culture and identity under the new name, which he believes has been embraced by both players and staff. "I think it’s now embraced by our team, by our culture, by our coaching staff. So we’re going with that," Harris remarked.

The Commanders' future also hinges on a proposed stadium deal with the D.C. government, a plan that still requires approval from the City Council. This development comes after Congress agreed to a long-term lease, allowing the franchise to establish a permanent home at the site where they played for over 35 years before relocating to Maryland.

As the focus shifts back to football, Peters has important matters to address, including contract negotiations with star receiver Terry McLaurin and the recent signing of veteran linebacker Von Miller. With players expected to report for physicals, Peters reiterated the team's focus: "We’re really focused on everything in the building and getting ready for the season and getting our guys in here."

The Commanders aim to build on their recent successes, including a surprising run to the NFC Championship game last season, as they prepare for what promises to be an eventful 2025 season.
