Construction Begins on St Ives Rugby Facility and Housing Development

Construction on a new rugby facility and housing development in St Ives, Cornwall, is set to commence towards the end of summer 2023. This project aims to relocate the existing rugby union clubhouse and training pitch to facilitate the construction of 120 new homes in the area. According to Cornwall Council, local contractors Fox Construction and WR Sandow have been appointed to deliver the first phase of this significant community project, marking a "key milestone" in the initiative.

The new facility will include a modern clubhouse and improved training facilities, with the rugby pitch anticipated to be ready for use by autumn 2026. The relocation of the clubhouse will enhance accessibility and offer better sightlines to the main pitch, which will benefit both players and spectators alike. Andrew Mitchell, a member of the Cornwall Council, stated, "I have supported both parts of this scheme, the rugby club development and proposed housing. It does seem to have taken an age to get to this point, but breaking ground will make it feel real and I wish all involved great success."

The initiative has secured financial backing of £2.9 million from the government’s Town Deal programme and an additional £2 million in match funding from Cornwall Council. This funding is crucial for the project's sustainability, especially as it aims to address local housing needs. Outline planning permission for the development includes provisions for up to 50 affordable homes and 70 extra care units, as indicated by Cornwall Council.

Ian Sanders, representing St Ives Rugby Football Club (RFC), expressed enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing its dual benefit of enhancing sports facilities while contributing to local housing solutions. Sanders remarked, "This development allows us to grow further on the pitch whilst continuing to support the local community off it for another 100 years. We also welcome the opportunity to play our part in assisting with the need for housing in our town."

The collaborative effort between Cornwall Council, St Ives RFC, and the Rugby Football Union illustrates a commitment to community development and sustainability. As the project progresses, it is expected to stimulate local economic growth and provide much-needed amenities for residents.

In conclusion, the St Ives rugby facility and housing development stands as a promising endeavor to balance community sports needs with residential requirements, potentially serving as a model for future developments across the region. The anticipated completion of the new pitch by 2026 marks a significant investment in both the sporting and residential landscape of St Ives, reinforcing the importance of community-focused initiatives in urban planning.
