DLA Piper Secures €332 Million for Valencia CF Stadium Redevelopment

In a significant development for the sports and finance sectors, DLA Piper has successfully advised a consortium of institutional investors and banking lenders, including Goldman Sachs, on a €332 million financing package aimed at redeveloping the Nou Mestalla stadium, the home of Valencia Club de Fútbol. This financing arrangement, which was announced on June 27, 2025, is structured through a Spanish securitization fund and encompasses all future business related to the stadium and adjacent developments.

The Nou Mestalla stadium, once completed, is expected to achieve FIFA's highest category, accommodating over 70,000 spectators, and will offer a suite of services for both match and non-match days. This redevelopment is seen as part of a broader strategic roadmap for Valencia CF, which recently secured a media rights financing package in 2024 that further enables the club to enhance its operational capabilities.

Charlotte Lewis-Williams, a partner at DLA Piper, emphasized the investment potential within the Spanish football sector, noting the strong global fan engagement and evolving commercial models that characterize the landscape. "This financing is another example of how our cross-border team has supported the liquidity and growth plans of European football clubs as they transform from iconic institutions to dynamic platforms for growth and innovation," she stated.

Andrés Lorrio, another partner at DLA Piper, described the Nou Mestalla project as a strategic milestone for Valencia CF. "This ambitious project marks a significant evolution in the club's business model through the establishment of a state-of-the-art multi-purpose stadium. After a challenging period for the province and city of Valencia, this redevelopment is anticipated to greatly enhance the city’s appeal and instill pride within the club's fanbase," he added.

DLA Piper's involvement in this transaction is part of its broader commitment to the sports sector, having previously facilitated financing for other clubs, including a €125 million refinancing for Real Betis Balompié and a €385 million refinancing of Olympique Lyonnais Group. The firm's European Sports Finance team operates within its Media, Sports, and Entertainment sector, providing legal and financial advisory services tailored to the unique needs of sports organizations.

The redevelopment of Nou Mestalla not only represents a crucial investment in infrastructure but also embodies the ongoing transformation of sports clubs into multifaceted enterprises capable of generating diverse revenue streams. As the project progresses, it is expected to attract further investment and interest from both domestic and international stakeholders, highlighting the growing intersection of sports and finance in contemporary society.

Looking ahead, the successful completion of the Nou Mestalla redevelopment could set a precedent for similar initiatives across Europe, as clubs continue to seek innovative financial solutions to modernize their facilities and enhance their competitive edge in an increasingly globalized sports market.
