Everton Enhances Train Capacity Ahead of New Stadium Launch

In anticipation of heightened demand for transportation, the Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, Steve Rotheram, has announced plans to double the train capacity for Everton Football Club's inaugural home match at their new stadium, Hills Dickinson Stadium, on August 23, 2023. During the test event, which was part of preparations for the stadium's opening, many attendees reported overcrowded Merseyrail services, with some passengers being asked to disembark before trains could depart due to safety concerns. Rotheram acknowledged these issues, stating, "There were problems with people hours before trying to get into town and we only had four carriage trains on," noting that the new plan will incorporate eight-carriage trains starting earlier than usual to accommodate fans.

Steve Rotheram emphasized the importance of developing a more efficient transportation routine for match days, suggesting that fans might choose to arrive early, enjoy local establishments, and find their own methods of arriving at the stadium. He stated, "We need to use Bank Hall more, we need to use James St more and potentially even Moorfields more." Additionally, a fan management zone near the stadium is planned to facilitate safer arrivals and departures for spectators.
