Formula E Teams and Drivers Lead Beach Clean-Up Effort in Jakarta

In a significant community engagement initiative, drivers and teams from the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship gathered on June 19, 2025, for a beach clean-up at Pantai Beach in Ancol, Jakarta. This event precedes the Sarinah Jakarta E-Prix, scheduled for June 21, and is part of Formula E's commitment to sustainability and local environmental stewardship.

The clean-up effort involved not only the teams and drivers but also local stakeholders, community groups, and commercial partners. Notable participants included JakPro, a government-owned enterprise, and Waste4Change, an organization specializing in waste management solutions. The initiative is part of a growing tradition, as this marks the second consecutive year that Formula E has organized a beach clean-up in Jakarta. In 2024, volunteers successfully collected 120 bags of waste, translating to over 440 kilograms of plastic and ocean debris removed from the beach.

Julia Pallé, Vice President of Sustainability at Formula E, emphasized the importance of addressing plastic pollution, which poses a significant threat to coastal habitats and community health in Jakarta. "Plastic pollution is a growing problem that affects everyone around the world and is particularly challenging here in Jakarta," Pallé stated. "At every race, we are committed to engaging with local communities and aim to leave a place better than we found it."

The refuse collected during the clean-up will be processed by Waste4Change, which focuses on creating sustainable solutions from hard-to-recycle materials. This approach not only emphasizes environmental responsibility but also highlights the potential for a circular economy where waste is transformed into valuable products, such as furniture made from recycled plastics and polystyrene.

The beach clean-up is aligned with Formula E's overarching sustainability strategy, which seeks to merge high-performance motorsport with environmental responsibility and community engagement. Each year, over 14 million tons of plastics enter the ocean, with a significant portion of this waste originating in Indonesia. The initiative aims to combat this issue by empowering local stakeholders, including children and community groups, to take active roles in preserving their environment.

To further promote sustainability at the Sarinah Jakarta E-Prix, Formula E has implemented several initiatives designed to reduce waste during the event. Free hydration stations will be available to discourage single-use plastic bottles, and spectators will receive biodegradable eco-cups made from corn starch flour as an alternative to traditional plastic. Additionally, six dedicated waste stations will be set up to support proper recycling and plastic waste management.

This year's Better Futures Fund recipient, Amirah, plans to utilize funds to deliver the CLIMATEABILITY project, which aims to empower individuals with disabilities, women, and youth to become leaders in climate action. Through these initiatives, Formula E not only showcases its commitment to sustainability but also fosters a legacy of environmental awareness and community empowerment in the regions it visits.

The Sarinah Jakarta E-Prix will take place on June 21, 2025, promising thrilling on-track action while underscoring the importance of sustainable practices in motorsport. As the championship continues to evolve, the integration of environmental initiatives into its core operations reflects a growing recognition of the role sports can play in addressing pressing global challenges.
